Elk Grove is Sky's team of the week
The contributions and success of coach Ryan Kirkorsky's Elk Grove girls basketball team have not gone unnoticed.
The Chicago Sky named the Grenadiers the “High School Girls Team of the Week” for the week of Nov. 24.
The Sky recognized the Grens for their excellence on and off the basketball court.
After winning 20 games in the 2009-10 campaign, the Grens began this season with three straight wins in the Elk Grove-LakePark-Hoffman Estates Thanksgiving tournament.
They currently stand at 3-1, with their only loss to undefeated Hoffman Estates.
Off the court, the Elk Grove girls' basketball program has participated in a variety of community service projects.
The girls volunteered at the Special Olympics Holiday Basketball Tournament last year and will do the same again this December.
This year's tournament starts on Dec. 5.
The Grenadier girls will volunteer as referees, time keepers and score keepers to help make the tournament a success.
As the “Team of the Week”, the Grenadiers will be provided a complementary “Team Night Out” ticket package to a 2011 Sky regular-season home game at Allstate Arena.
The Grenadier girls will have the opportunity to watch the world's best female basketball players and talk to Sky players and coaches before the game.
The Grens will also be honored on the court during the game.
They will also have the Sky experience brought to one of their home games.
The Sky is recognizing one high school girls basketball team each week throughout this season.
It is now accepting nominations from parents, coaches, faculty members and players. Nomination forms can be accessed and submitted at www.chicagosky.net or can be requested by mail.
Forms should be mailed to Chicago Sky, Attn: Community Relations, 20 W. Kinzie, Suite 1010, Chicago, IL 60654 or faxed to the Sky office at 312.828.9979.
