Fundraiser supports scholarships for Glenbard North grads
A bowling party later this month will help send a high school senior to college next fall and could help countless more for years to come.
Family and friends of Alexa Bertram are hosting the bowling fundraiser to support a scholarship in her name through the Northern Illinois University Foundation. The group already has raised $20,600, with a goal of reaching $25,000 enough to endow the Alexa Rae Bertram Scholarship.
“Lexi” graduated from Glenbard North High School in 2008 intent on becoming a clinical psychologist. Her plans included attending NIU to major in psychology and minor in creative writing, then continuing to earn her master's degree.
She died unexpectedly just two weeks after her high school graduation, prompting her family to initiate the scholarship fund. Already, the fund has awarded $1,000 scholarships to two Glenbard North graduates who enrolled as full-time NIU students.
Proceeds from the bowling party will help the fund reach the $25,000 mark that university officials say will allow the Bertram Scholarships to be awarded indefinitely.
The bowling party begins at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, at Brunswick Zone, 170 W. North Ave., Carol Stream. Participants can play three games of Scotch doubles, enjoy unlimited pizza and soft drinks, and enter a raffle with prizes, including a 32-inch HD television, a laptop and a GPS unit.
Tickets are $25 for those who send a $5 deposit by Monday, Nov. 15, to Micki Niebuhr, 853 Niagra, Carol Stream, 60188, or to Cindy Krzywy, 8 Franklin Court, Streamwood, 60108. The balance can be paid at the door.
For those who don't send a deposit, admission is $30 at the door.
