Scouting Waukegan at Antioch

Waukegan (0-1) at Antioch (1-0)

When: 7:30 p.m., today

Last week: Waukegan lost to Glenbrook North, 14-13; Antioch def. Streamwood, 47-13.

Outlook: Antioch blew by Waukegan 41-20 last year, and the Bulldogs wound up finishing 1-8 in 2009. But Antioch coach Brian Glashagel says that doesn't mean much. "Waukegan is very much improved this year," Glashagel said. "We scouted them last weekend and they lost to a good Glenbrook North team, but they really should have won that game. They lost 14-13 and had a bad snap on an extra point. And they had one passing play where this kid had the ball in his hands but didn't catch it. Had he caught it, he would have walked into the end zone for a touchdown. They've got some really good, fast athletes on that team and they can make some big plays. One of their touchdowns was an option play for 80 yards and another was a 101-yard interception return."-One mystery surrounding Waukegan will be at the starting quarterback position. Akeem Springs started at that spot last year and is also a star basketball player at the school. But he missed preseason workouts in order to travel to Mississippi and visit his sister, who is recovering from cancer. Because he didn't have enough practices to be eligible to play last week, Springs was forced to sit out while Reggie Richter got the call at starting quarterback. This week, Springs is reportedly eligible to return. "We're not sure who will be in there," Glashagel said. "We'll just be ready for anything."-Meanwhile, the Bulldogs will need to be ready for a four-headed monster also known as Antioch's running game. The Sequoits rolled up the points and the yardage last week against Streamwood. They finished with 379 rushing yards, including 150 yards from Sam Green, 110 yards from Dan Arden and 71 yards from Vinnie Holm, who led the way with 3 touchdowns. "We had really nice balance and everyone was running so well," Glashagel said. "It kind of felt like I was coaching a park district team and I had to make sure that everyone got the ball a little bit."
