Scholarship contest beginsApplications are now available for state Sen. Michael Noland's 2010 College Scholarship Contest. The program allows each member of the Illinois General Assembly to award scholarships to nine Illinois public universities to students in the 22nd Senate District who have been active in public and civic affairs, demonstrated academic achievement or are in need of assistance. Applications are available at Noland's office, 100 E. Chicago St., Suite 302, Elgin, 60120, and are due by April 30. For details, call (847) 214-8864.Health department hosts screeningThe McHenry County Department of Health is hosting cardiovascular screenings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18. The screenings each cost $35 and measure cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure, among other indicators. They will be at McHenry County College, 8900 Northwest Highway, Crystal Lake. You must fast for 12 hours before the screening. Call (815) 334-4536 for more information.District 3 hosts kindergarten registrationFox River Grove Elementary District 3 will host registration and screenings for kindergartners March 8 and 10 at Algonquin Road School, 975 Algonquin Road. Preschool screenings also will be held on the afternoon of March 10 at the same school. A child must be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2010, to register for kindergarten for the 2010-11 school year. Bring your child's original birth certificate as proof. If you're registering your child for the first time in the district, you must also bring four proofs of residency, including one of the following: your most recent property tax bill, mortgage papers or a signed and dated lease.
