  • Pagan, Bartlett shut down Lake Park May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Keep it low. It seemed simple enough. Junior Holly Pagan had to work out of some stressful situations, but she was able to execute the plan and keep Lake Park hitters off balance while silencing the Lancers’ potent offense as defending Class 4A state runner-up Bartlett captured its second consecutive regional title by taking a 3-1 victory over Lake Park Saturday in the Class 4A Bartlett regional final. The Hawks (27-9) now advance to play St. Charles East on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the St. Charles East sectional. The Saints beat Bartlett 4-1 on April 9.

  • Bartlett’s VanDyke outduels Hoffman’s Ward May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
If Hoffman Estates pitcher Jimmy Ward performed against any other team as he did against Bartlett Saturday, the Cinderella run for the 18th-seeded Hoffman may have ended in a regional championship celebration. Instead, the Evansville-bound Ward, who pitched 6 solid innings of 5-hit ball, giving up 1 earned with 2 strikeouts, was upstaged by Bartlett’s Doug VanDyke, who lost a no-hitter in the seventh during a late Hoffman rally, but concluded matters to earn a shutout and Bartlett a 2-0 win for its second-consecutive Class 4A regional title in Bartlett.

DeLoye, Barrington quickly get back on track downstate May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
The disappointment that Barrington junior Parker Deloye felt after the high jump went away — quickly. All it took was two laps around the track by the members of the Broncos' 800-meter relay team, and all was well again with Deloye. During the prelims session of the Class 3A boys track and field state championships at Eastern Illinois University and O'Brien Field, Deloye missed the cut in the high jump but bounced back with a robust leadoff leg on the Broncos 800 relay. JP Brooks, Brendan Melynchuk and Scotty Miller joined him in a school record 1:28.64 to earn a spot in Saturdays' finals as the third overall seed. "This definitely makes up for earlier," Deloye said.
