Animal shelter and adoption facility coming to Palatine May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Despite concerns from a few neighboring businesses over noise and odors, an animal shelter and adoption facility has received unanimous approval to open in Palatine. Barb's Precious Rescue and Adoption Center will house up to 50 cats and six dogs in an old farm house at 313 N. Quentin Road. "I think I can offer the village of Palatine a solution for animal control in a very professional manner," said owner Barbara Weber.

Palatine denies liquor license due to landlord’s conviction May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Palatine officials have denied a license to a proposed liquor store, saying its location's owner — previously convicted of selling stolen alcohol — is trying to skirt village ordinance by gifting the property to his wife. Although Muhammad Amjad officially would be only the landlord to Quick Liquor, 2387 N. Hicks Road, the council Monday unanimously voted against issuing the liquor license to the proposed tenant, in part because the Oak Brook man would financially benefit.

Inverness man gets probation for retirement home burglary May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
An Inverness man pleaded guilty Tuesday to taking a flat screen television from a Palatine retirement home. In exchange for his guilty plea to burglary, Leonardo Adames was sentenced to 24 months probation and ordered to pay $500 restitution.

All Saints in Palatine to hold free community dinner May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
All Saints Lutheran Church in Palatine will hold a community spaghetti dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the church, 630 S. Quentin Road. The dinner is free and open to the public. The church and its youth group have been primary sponsors of Youth Hunger Opposition, which has raised more than $100,000 for the Palatine Township Food Pantry.

Farina leads potent Fremd lineup May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
A big turnout showed up for Fremd softball Senior Tradition Day' and the Vikings brought out some big bats. Junior shortstop Leigh Farina belted 2 home runs and senior first baseman Michelle Mazur had one as the Vikings rolled to a 12-0 five-inning triumph over visiting Glenbrook South in the nonconference game in Palatine. The Vikings are now 20-7, marking the 11th time Fremd coach Jim Weaver has won 20 or more games in his 12 seasons directing the program.

Beutler’s blast lifts Fremd May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Fremd used a 3-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a victory that gave them a 4-2 victory over Rolling Meadows on Tuesday and wrapped up a second-place finish for the Vikings in the MSL West. Marcus Middlebrook tied it up with an RBI double in the final inning, and Sam Beutler finished the game by hitting a walk-off 2-run homer.

St. Viator, Vernon Hills to meet for 2A regional title May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Viator and Vernon Hills started out their girls soccer postseasons with victories in opening-round games of the Class 2A state tournament on Tuesday afternoon. Fourth-seeded St. Viator shut out No. 13 Amundsen 8-0 in the first semifinal, and No. 5 Vernon Hills picked up a forfeit win over No. 12 Mather in the other semifinal in Amundsen regional action at Chicago's Winnemac Stadium. St. Viator (10-7) next plays Vernon Hills (10-4-2) in the regional championship at 10 a.m. Saturday at Winnemac Stadium.

Despite owning a string of Camaros, Bob Zogarfos of Palatine never owned a big-block version. In 2002 he set to rectify that. His 1968 Camaro SS was located in Abingdon, Mass., when Zogarfos turned a family vacation into an inspection extravaganza. “We were visiting Virginia and made a detour to swing by. I spent three days reviewing the car,” he said.

District 211 students ready to show off houses they built May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
After two years of work, three homes built by Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 students are ready for families to move in. An open house will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 19, at the homes, located at 72 W. Illinois Ave., 86 W. Illinois Ave. and 151 Boynton Ave. in Palatine. The public will have an opportunity to bid on the houses at the open house events.

For the first time this century, Buffalo Grove will play for the Mid-Suburban League softball championship. Under third-year coach Jamie Paul, the Bison clinched the MSL East on Monday with a 6-5 victory over visiting Hersey.

Another command performance by Elk Grove’s Camacho May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Elk Grove senior pitcher David Camacho completed a perfect run through his Mid-Suburban League opponents, tossing a complete-game 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts as the Grenadiers wrapped up regular-season league play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Conant on Monday. Camacho improved to 7-1 overall and finished 6-0 against MSL foes. He allowed 2 walks. Luc DiMaso did most of the damage offensively for Elk Grove (21-8, 12-4). He had 2 hits — a solo homer and a double — and scored both runs. Michael Anciulis also had 2 hits, including a double.

Perfect finish for Dolezal, Barrington in MSL May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Perfection was the word of the day for Barrington's softball team. The Fillies ended a perfect season in the Mid-Suburban West with a perfect game from sophomore pitcher Keenan Dolezal. Dolezal retired 21 straight batters before the Fillies got her the win in bottom of the seventh inning at the Fields of Dreams. Barrington junior first baseman Katie Dehnert's hard infielder grounder with two outs and the bases loaded brought home Erin Ward with the winning run. The 1-0 victory gave Barrington its first West crown since 2009 and 16th divisional crown in school history.

Nice day for Niecikowski as Meadows clinches MSL East May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
Junior Alex Niecikowski was having a great day, and that was before the game even started Monday against visiting Palatine. Niecikowski was celebrating his 17th birthday, and he made it a memorable by leading the Mustangs (16-8-1, 13-1) past Palatine 5-4 to clinch an outright Mid-Suburban East championship.
