    The Elk Grove High School Choir is scheduled to perform onstage Friday night with Foreigner at Northerly Island in Chicago. The choir was the winner of a 104.3 KHITS radio contest in which the public got to vote online for their favorite high school choir performing the Foreigner song, “I Want To Know What Love Is.”

    Officials at Northwest Suburban High School District 214 will discuss renaming Forest View Alternative School at Thursday’s school board meeting in an effort to change what they say are misconceptions about the school. “The current name poses several concerns. The word alternative suggests that all students have a reputation for drug involvement, gang affiliation, and legal problems,” according to a district memo.

    John Hersey High School’s Latin American Student Organization recently took Second Place at the Highland Park High School Hispanos Unidos Club 17th Annual Chicano College Bowl. Senior Kim Roman, juniors Ivett Delgado and Julian Lopez, and freshman Crista Mondragon competed against 11 other area high school teams to capture the award.

     
  • Wheeling delays tax increment financing districts Jun 3, 2014 5:06 PM
    Wheeling postponed re-establishing two tax increment financing districts Monday, which also postponed any lawsuit from school districts and the library and park districts that serve the community. The village board must wait for Cook County’s certified equalized assessed valuation for the areas within the districts, said Village Manager Jon Sfondilis. He said after the meeting that officials are willing to answer questions raised by the other boards.

     
  • District 214, teachers reach new 5-year contract May 23, 2014 1:11 PM
    Northwest Suburban High School District 214 and its 850 teachers and counselors reached an agreement this week on a new five-year contract. More than 85 percent of Education Association members approved the contract on Tuesday and the District 214 school board approved the agreement Thursday night.

    Burt “Sarge” Showers, a World War II veteran who served under Gen. Douglas MacArthur and later taught history at two suburban high schools, now has a scholarship named in his honor. The scholarship, to be given annually to a Palatine High School senior, will be awarded for the first time Wednesday night. “We had a great four years together,” former Palatine student Ed Rogan said.

    Northwest Suburban High School District 214 will begin offering noncredit enrichment classes in topics ranging from rock n’ roll to cooking this summer as part of a pilot program. The initiative is part of the district’s Talent Development Program, and will include classes in art, science, philosophy, fashion, music and film.

  • District 214 drops National School Lunch Program May 9, 2014 5:40 PM
    Northwest Suburban High School District 214 has voted to join a small number of suburban schools no longer following USDA guidelines for school lunches, deciding to drop out of the National School Lunch Program. The District 214 school board unanimously approved the move, meaning that the more than 12,000 students across six high schools will not be abiding by the new, healthier national guidelines starting next school year.

     
  • Negotiations continue over controversial Wheeling TIF plan May 7, 2014 2:31 PM
    Negotiations to avoid a lawsuit over Wheeling’s plan to establish two Tax Increment Financing districts on the sites of failed TIFs continue, say representatives of the village and four other governing bodies threatening to sue over the proposal. Village President Dean Argiris said this week a lawsuit would ruin chances for three major developments planned for the Town Center TIF district, but he is “confident” the village and the other governments will reach agreement.
