    In the wake of Rob Komosa's death, the Northwest Suburban High School District 214 school board is again being urged to provide catastrophic accident insurance for its student athletes. Members of the Gridiron Alliance made the plea at last week's board meeting, a day after legislation requiring high schools to provide coverage moved through a state senate panel, and five days after Komosa — a former Rolling Meadows High School football player paralyzed during a 1999 practice — died.

    Registration fees in Northwest Suburban High School District 214 will be going up each year for the next few years but will be frozen for the duration of a student's high school career. The proposal approved unanimously by the District 214 school board on Thursday night differs from one presented a few weeks ago that would have incrementally raised fees for all students each year over a number of years.

    Five math students from Wheeling High School recently competed in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge and won "Best in State." The students, Gosia Markiewicz, Kamila Sikora, Skyler McLenahan, Pranati Mondkar and Jessica Mamalio, along with their faculty advisor and math teacher, Kate Weber, will now move forward in consideration for the National award.

Patricia Schreiner and Ken Cooper had both been at Rolling Meadows for several decades. "It was a really difficult day yesterday," said Principal Eileen Hart.

    Student fees may be going up in Northwest Suburban High School District 214. On Thursday, the District 214 school board discussed a plan to raise student fees incrementally through 2016. But based on that discussion, the recommendation board members vote on in two weeks may look somewhat different, district spokeswoman Venetia Miles said Friday.

The Wheeling Jazz Band I, directed by Brian Logan, won Class "AAA" for the sixth consecutive year, and qualified to participate in the Finals.
