  • Harper to host Chicago area premiere of ‘The SuperDeafy Movie’ Aug 15, 2014 1:57 PM
    Harper will host two screenings of the independent, feature-length film “No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie” at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the college’s Building J Theater, 1200 W. Algonquin Road. Live question and answer sessions will follow with Executive Producers Liz Tannebaum and Paul Maucere.

    Harper College Trustee Bill Kelley has taken over the reins of Illinois Community College Trustees Association, a statewide group that has been a vocal advocate for increasing state funding for all community colleges in Illinois. Kelley will serve as president of the ICCTA after being elected as vice president of the group last year. The ICCTA president serves a one-year term and receives no compensation.

    For Harper College student-athlete Colin Weber, he knew that his time competing at the college level was not over. Weber was an All-American for the Hawks in both cross country and track and field during his sophomore year (2012-13) and served as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2013-14 school year. Although he described himself as an "average" athlete in high school, Weber kept working hard at Harper even while battling anemia. Weber's hard work paid off, as he recently signed his NCAA Letter of Intent to compete for Div. II University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut.

    Suburban counties have seen steep drops in the number of people taking GED exams in 2014. The test changed to an electronic version that is both more difficult and more expensive, experts say. Fewer people taking the exam may mean a larger pool of local residents with poor long-term job prospects. “Somebody is profiting significantly, and it's not our students and our state,” Regional Superintendent Leslie Schermerhorn said.

    Lutheran Church Charities, which started the Addison-based Comfort Dog Ministry, Friday launched its newest outreach: Kare-9 Ministry, designed to serve active military, veterans and their families. “Part of the healing process from moral injury and post-traumatic stress disorder is to feel loved and valued,” said retired Maj. Gen. James Mukoyama. “The Comfort Dogs give off a type of peace — and unconditional love.”

    Shirley Garrison carries around a thick, black notebook filled with meticulous notes. The 86-year-old history buff loves to flip through the pages, recalling the wide range of classes she’s taken from a look at the first Mayor Daley to one woman’s journey from her homeland to Ellis Island. Garrison especially enjoyed her most recent course, “Civil War Field Embalming,” which took students back in time to a 19th century medical school lecture with actors playing a doctor and corpse.

     
  • Men charged with stealing student loan money from suburban colleges Jul 31, 2014 1:44 PM
    Four Chicago area men are accused of bilking federal student loans from Harper College in Palatine, Elgin Community College and Joliet Junior College. Prosecutors said the men attempted to obtain $240,000 worth of student loans, but were successful in receiving about $135,000 from 40 fraudulent applications. The men face maximum prison sentences of 20 or 30 years if convicted.
