  • Prospect pleased with 4th-place Moore/Prettyman finish Nov 29, 2014 9:58 PM
    Prospect rode a championship from Matt Wroblewski and seven other medalists to capture fourth-place at the 24th Moore-Prettyman Wrestling Invitational on Saturday night in Barrington. The Knights secured their best-finish ever for coach Tom Whalen with 157.50 overall points, 4 better than Grant (153.5) and 7 more than Mid-Suburban League rival Barrington. Lyons Township used a big finish in the afternoon sessions to outscore runner-up Lincoln-Way Central (208.5-185) and Yorkville (159).

     
  • Coronado, Grant step forward at Barrington Nov 29, 2014 8:06 PM
    There were a lot of positives for Lake County teams and individuals Saturday at the 24th Annual Moore/Prettyman Wrestling Invitational in Barrington. Lyons Township rolled to the championship of the powerful 25-team meet with 208.5 points with Lincoln-Way Central (185) in second as the Lions showed great depth up and down their lineup. The battle for third place was a close one, as Yorkville (159 points) held off fourth-place Prospect (157.5) and fifth-place Grant (153.5). Grant’s effort was led by 138-pound senior Cristian Coronado (5-0), who posted an 11-6 decision over Plainfield Central’s Clayton Ledbetter for the championship.

    The wrestling teams from Grant and Prospect were within striking distance of tourney-leading Yorkville as the first day of the 24th Moore-Prettyman Invitational came to an Friday night in Barrington. The North Suburban Conference favorite Bulldogs are currently sitting 1 point ahead of Prospect (92.5-91.50) in fourth place — 17.5 points behind Yorkville (110.00) and also trailing Lyons Township (108) and Lincoln-Way Central (94). The action resumes at 10 a.m. Saturday with third-round consolation matches, followed by semifinals on the Barrington Fieldhouse floor.

    Host Vernon Hills wanted to get the wrestling season started off on the right foot Wednesday night against Wauconda. And after building a commanding 35-7 lead after nine matches, the Cougars did just that as they held off a determined Bulldogs team for an exciting 41-31 North Suburban Conference victory in this Prairie Division battle.

  • St. Charles East pins its way past Geneva Nov 25, 2014 11:48 PM
    The two-time defending wrestling champions of the Upstate Eight River Division were up to familiar tricks on the first night of the season Tuesday night in Geneva. St. Charles East’s Adam Carlson, Anthony Rubino and Niko Derain all recorded third-period falls in the opening four matches. Nine matches later, the Saints’ Will Leite earned yet another fall to mathematically eliminate the Vikings in the early showdown. The expected duel between the two state-ranked programs never completely materialized as St. Charles East never trailed in its 42-23 dual-match victory.

No one wants to be pushed around, or worse yet, pushed out by someone or something else. Just ask Sky forward Elena Delle Donne, who’s got to be wondering if she will ultimately get to navigate her WNBA career on her terms, or if her Lyme Disease and its nasty flare-ups will have the final say. Meanwhile, Indiana Fever forward and former Chicago suburbanite Tamika Catchings has been fighting her own debilitating demon this season, which has led to some understandable questions about her “terms.”

    Asked her pitching record after warming up, Sandburg left-hander Sarah Herold said she didn’t know. “We didn’t have a very good season,” she said. The Eagles were good enough Monday to oust Naperville Central from the state softball playoffs.

He has selected Augustana in Rock Island, where he will be a member of coach Rob Cushman’s football program and coach Eric Juergens’ defending College of Illinois and Wisconsin champion wrestling squad.

    One week after crowning five Class 2A individual champions, the Montini wrestling squad achieved another milestone Saturday in Bloomington. The Broncos steamrolled Washington, Cahokia and Geneseo to win their seventh consecutive dual team state championship.

    The star-studded and much-anticipated state dual-team quarterfinal between Libertyville and Hononegah turned out to be everything all had expected, unless you were proudly wearing the orange and black of Libertyville. The Wildcats (21-3-0) were bounced out of the tournament following a heartbreaking 32-24 loss Saturday at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, thus ending a memorable season, as well as the wrestling careers of eight competitors in the Wildcats’ lineup Saturday.

  • National power OPRF too much for Conant Mar 1, 2014 9:12 PM
    Conant came to the Class 3A dual-team wrestling state tournament hoping to put a dent in the side of the favored club from Oak Park-River Forest. But in the Cougars' quarterfinal opener at U.S. Cellular Coliseum, Conant was in a hit-and-run with the Huskies, who rolled right past the MSL champions, as well as two other subsequent foes, en route to a state title late Saturday night. The No. 1-ranked Huskies (28-1-0) sent out a strong message to their latter victims, Hononegah and Marist, after rolling over Conant 59-9 to start their day.
