    In what may be his most important victory thus far at Crystal Lake South, Eric Barone showed remarkable staying power as he pulled a cunning move in OT to defeat No. 3 Fernie Silva of Hononegah to capture a sectional championship at 145 pounds Saturday afternoon at Barrington.

  • Libertyville, Grant lead march downstate Feb 15, 2014 10:05 PM
    Libertyville collectively flexed its muscle Saturday in Barrington, and Warren’s Emery Parker validated his chances as a trophy chaser in the upcoming week as the Class 3A state tournament begins. The Wildcats, who are on their way to the dual-team sectionals later this month, won four individual titles and will send six downstate after a successful second day of sectional wrestling Saturday at Barrington. North Suburban Conference champion Grant will have five in action Thursday in Champaign, including 132-pound champion Troy Parent (30-9). Lake Zurich will send three into action later in the week.

  • Schultz leads Antioch’s effort at Lakes Feb 15, 2014 9:11 PM
    There were a lot of happy coaches and wrestlers Saturday at the conclusion of the Class 2A Lakes individual sectional. Five Lake County area squads qualified three individuals apiece for the state meet at State Farm Center in Champaign. The top four finishers in each of the 14 weight classes earned a berth downstate. Perennial power Montini was the class of the powerful field, as the Broncos had 12 of their 13 sectional qualifiers advance to state meet, which starts Thursday. Antioch got through three wrestlers, starting with 106-pound senior Briley Schultz.

  • Barrington’s Stathakis wins at 106 Feb 15, 2014 11:33 PM
    Mitch Stathakis maintained his perfect postseason record following yet another sparkling weekend performance on the wrestling mats. The Barrington sophomore was virtually flawless on Saturday at the Broncos’ home, using a lethal attack to defeat two challengers, the last coming in the 106-pound final against Ulises Jacobo of DeKalb. Stathakis pinned the sophomore at 1:47 to capture the only championship crown for the Mid-Suburban League at the Barrington sectional.

    The Marmion wrestling team has an entirely different look from this time in January. The Cadets, the reigning state runners-up in Class 3A, were forfeiting as many as five weight classes due to injuries last month. But one week after dominating the Waubonsie Valley regional, Marmion had another stellar team performance at the Hinsdale Central individual sectional on Saturday afternoon.

  • Glenbard North sends 7 to state Feb 15, 2014 10:35 PM
    With 12 out of 14 wrestlers qualifying for the state tournament, and 10 of them winning the sectional, Oak Park-River Forest continued it run of dominance Saturday at the Leyden sectional in Franklin Park. But that did not deter wrestlers from other schools from flexing muscles of their own. Glenbard North was able to qualify seven of the 11 athletes it sent to Leyden, with Jared Cortez (132 pounds) and Jon Marmolejo (126) winning their weight class. Kirk Johansen (106), Austin Gomez (113), Patrick Augustyn (120) Colton Wegner (170) all finished third with Luke Greenberg (195) qualifying and finishing fourth in his weight class for the Panthers.

    When the wrestling state tournament series began last weekend, talk already began on how difficult the Barrington sectional would be, and which weight classes would sure to be those which would tantalize, tease and torment the players, coaches, families and friends. With a group filled with talent from top-to-bottom, the 120-pound division was one to keep a sharp eye on. The Fox Valley Conference had its share of favorites here, and when the night came to an end on Friday, Michael Cullen and Cody Ferencz were still left standing in the championship bracket on the eve of today’s 9 a.m. semifinals.

  • Trio steps up for sectional host Barrington Feb 15, 2014 2:00 AM
    On the big mats in their own house, Barrington’s Mitch Stathakis, Matt Conrad and Julius Smith drew one step closer to booking their spot in the Class 3A wrestling state tournament. The sophomore 106-pounder Stathakis (30-3) showed his intent with a masterful 14-2 major decision to send him into Saturday’s 9 a.m. semifinal against Michael Lynch of New Trier. Conrad, a senior, left little doubt in his match with Sam Riportella (33-10) of Mundelein, which resulted in an impressive 13-0 major in his second-round bout at 132 pounds. Next up is Christian Fausel (26-10) of Hononegah. And Smith, who has made a habit of late of keeping the Broncos faithful on the edge of their seats with last-minute success, was up to his old tricks when he used a takedown in the closing moments to outlast Prospect freshman Matt Wroblewski (33-8) 3-1 in his 160-pound quarterfinal.

  • Carmel sends four into semis at Lakes Feb 14, 2014 10:31 PM
    With day one of the competition now in the books Friday night, the stage is set for the exciting conclusion to the Class 2A Lakes individual wrestling sectional beginning Saturday morning in Lake Villa. The wrestling gets underway at 10 a.m. before the critical semifinals take place at approximately 11:30 a.m. Session III begins with semifinal wrestlebacks at 2:30 p.m. followed by first and third-place matches around 4 p.m. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the state meet Feb. 20-22 at State Farm Center in Champaign.

  • Libertyville’s Polakowski produces at Barrington Feb 14, 2014 10:25 PM
    Under the watchful eyes of a big Friday night crowd, Libertyville’s Steve Polakowski (37-1) dominated Andrew Mehrholz of Deerfield with six minutes of marvelous hard work to deliver an impressive 6-1 victory and a spot in the Saturday morning semifinals when Day 2 of the Barrington sectional begins. The No. 2-rated 120-pounder will face Cody Ferencz (33-4) of Jacobs, with the winner advancing not only into the final later today, but also to the state tournament which begins in Champaign on Thursday.

    Huntley was strong at the lower weights, while Dundee-Crown did most of its damage in the middle and upper weights, but both will be well-represented in sectionals. The Red Raiders advanced 6 wrestlers and the Chargers 5 at the Class 3A DeKalb individual sectional Saturday. Jacobs was right behind with 4 individual qualifiers. As expected Hononegah ran away with the team title, racking up 234 ½ points to 158 ½ for the host Barbs. D-C was third with 152 and Huntley fourth with 146.

  • Another regional crown for Glenbard North Feb 8, 2014 7:55 PM
    Glenbard North's Jon Marmolejo and Larkin's Duke Bogicevic entered the 126-pound championship match of the Class 3A South Elgin wrestling regional Saturday with a combined 81-2 record. The match wasn't much of a contest. Marmolejo dominated Bogicevic and won by fall 43 seconds into the third period. Marmolejo was leading 14-1 at the time. “My goal was to pin him, obviously,” said Marmolejo, a senior. “I knew he was going to come out strong. I just had to wear him out eventually. The pin came along.” Marmolejo's title was one of eight individual championships for the Panthers, who had wrestlers in 12 of the 14 title matches. Glenbard North won the team title with 263.5 points, easily distancing itself from St. Charles East (182). Geneva (117) was third followed by South Elgin (103.5) and Bartlett (79.50). The regional title is the 24th in program history for the Panthers.

  • Libertyville edges Grant for regional victory Feb 8, 2014 8:39 PM
    After losing to Grant by 19.5 points last weekend at the North Suburban Conference meet, the Libertyville wrestling team was ready to get some revenge Saturday at their own Class 3A regional. The visiting Bulldogs only trailed the Wildcats by 7.5 points heading into the final round, but playing “catch up” the rest of the way was not a winning formula as Libertyville put away its constant nemesis by a final score of 214.5 to 192. In the process, the Wildcats won their 27th regional championship in school history and they advanced to the team sectional Feb. 25 against McHenry regional champion Barrington at a site to be determined.

  • Marmion dominates regional Feb 8, 2014 11:40 PM
    Moving up a class for the state wrestling tournaments has been a godsend for Marmion. The defending Class 3A team runners-up, the Cadets were in a league of their own at the Waubonsie Valley individual regional Saturday afternoon in Aurora. Crowning all but one of their 11 championship finalists, the Cadets dominated the largely Aurora and Naperville field by almost 140 points. Waubonsie Valley and Wheaton Warrenville South combined for 13 qualifiers to the Hinsdale Central sectional next week in placing a distant second and third, respectively.

  • Barrington wins, with help, at McHenry Feb 8, 2014 9:09 PM
    For a while, it looked as if the expected race for the big trophy would not materialize between favored Deerfield and challengers Barrington, Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake South and host McHenry. As it turned out, Lake Zurich which was just a click behind Deerfield nearly two hours into the Class 3A regional. But a funny thing happened on the way to the round of wrestleback semifinals — so funny that Barrington coach Ken Hoving finally managed a small grin when he saw his club pull within reach of Deerfield, trailing just 119-113 in advance of the medal round. Later, after celebrating individual titles from Matt Stathakis (103, 29-3) and Matt Conrad (132, 29-10) and saying thank you to his FVC coaching counterparts for their help along the way, Hoving broke into a broad smile midway through the finals when the scoreboard flashed his Broncos were now atop the leaderboard at 146.0-136.5. Five weights later, and after a trio of second-place finishes, the Broncos got one last bit of help at 195 as Ryan Grannemann of McHenry defeated Christo Moran of Deerfield 4-1, helping get the Broncos a fourth straight regional championship.
