    For the first time, the Wheeling Park District is making Traditions at Chevy Chase Golf Course available to runners for the Chevy Chase 5K at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov.10. This fun, new event, in a unique setting is suitable for runners of all ages and abilities.

    It won't solve every flooding problem along the Des Plaines River, but the Heritage Park project will do its part to protect Wheeling, Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights from the worst of it. And now, the end is in sight, as the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District says completion is only about a year away. “We are providing a floodplain shelf that will fill and empty with the ebb and flow of Buffalo Creek,” said Allison Fore, of the MWRD.

The Wheeling Park District dedicated the new and improved Husky Park June 20, revealing a new playground, gazebo and basketball court to the village. The park is at 1100 Lee St. behind Jack London Middle School. Husky Park’s makeover includes new climbing apparatuses, slides and swings to accommodate children ages 2-12.

  • U.S. Senator Durbin, officials inspect Heritage Park Flood Control Facility construction site Oct 26, 2012 3:08 PM
    Construction is underway at the Heritage Park Flood Control Facility in Wheeling, and last week, U.S. Senator Richard J. Durbin and Illinois State Rep. Elaine Nekritz toured the area. Staff from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) were also present, along with representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers, Wheeling Park District, village of Wheeling, village of Mount Prospect and city of Prospect Heights.

    After Karen and Brian Cohn lost their 6-year-old son, Zachary, in a 2007 pool drain accident, they started the ZAC Foundation to promote water safety for children. The foundation is hosting a swim camp in Wheeling this week for more than 100 kids. "We want to educate others because we don't want this tragedy to happen to anyone else," said Karen.
