Naperville Unit District 203 officials are planning to strengthen a district policy on abused and neglected children, in light of recent allegations that administrators in a neighboring school district may have failed to report a possible sex abuse case immediately. One of those administrators — current District 203 Superintendent Dan Bridges — was principal of West Aurora High School in 2010 when a custodian reported an encounter between band director Steve Orland and a female student.

Two more local schools are giving their students the option of attending other schools this fall.Kaneland John Stewart Elementary School in Elburn and Rotolo Middle School in Batavia must offer the so-called “school choice” because of the results of standardized tests students took in the spring.School choice is required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which sets passing standards for schools and for subgroups of student types in those schools.Kaneland District 302 is dealing with the requirement for the first time. Kaneland John Stewart Elementary School is offering a choice after it failed to make adequate yearly progress because one of the school's subgroups — the economically disadvantaged — didn't have enough students score well in reading. Only 75.5 percent made the grade.

A 50-year-old Aurora man is being questioned by Aurora police after a possible attempted child abduction Thursday morning a few blocks away from a west-side middle school, authorities said. A 13-year-old Aurora girl who was walking to Jefferson Middle School was approached about 8:30 a.m. on the 1300 block of Monomoy Street by a man driving an older black vehicle with a child seat in the back, according to West Aurora District 129.

New Naperville Unit District 203 Superintendent Dan Bridges said he's received an overwhelming amount of support from the community, during his first public comments since revelations surfaced that Bridges and other West Aurora District 129 officials may have failed to report a possible sex abuse case immediately. "I've felt welcome and part of this community and this school district since day one," Bridges said.

New Naperville Unit District 203 Superintendent Dan Bridges appears to have most school board members' support as Kane County authorities investigate whether he and other West Aurora school employees illegally failed to report concerns of inappropriate behavior between a teacher and student. At least two board members, however, say they have questions about how Bridges handled accusations of sexual abuse lodged by a custodian who said he saw suspicious activity between a former West Aurora High School band director and a female student when Bridges was principal.

DCFS: West Aurora High broke state reporting law Aug 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Officials with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services say several West Aurora School District officials, including Dan Bridges, who is now Superintendent of Naperville Unit District 203, acted irresponsibly by not reporting an alleged act of abuse in July 2010. "Schools can sometimes make the mistake of thinking that they have the option to do their own internal evaluation," DCFS spokesman Kendall Marlowe said.

An Aurora couple has sued West Aurora District 129 and a prekindergarten teacher at Hope D. Wall School, arguing she was negligent in leaving a cup of scalding hot tea on a counter in a room full of hyperactive, special-needs students in November 2011. One child, who was 3 at the time, knocked over the cup and got third-degree burns on his face, neck and torso.

Meliton Chaidez, an eighth-grader from Aurora, won a regional speech contest and will represent Illinois and Iowa at the national contest with two dozen other contestants. He's also an honor-roll student and was a student ambassador and student council member. He participated in an IMSA math/science before-school program, got an award for students with exemplary characte and got a service award. Saidhis principal: "I would not be surprised to see Meliton — if he chose to — be the first Latino president of the United States. He's just that good."

At a time when suburban schools are pushing back hard against taking over the states share of teacher retirement costs, many are paying thousands of dollars sometimes hundreds of thousands in penalties to Illinois pension systems for giving big raises to administrators and teachers. Suburban schools charged the highest penalties are Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54, West Aurora District 129, Barrington Area Unit District 220, Hawthorn Elementary District 73, Elgin Area School District U-46 and Naperville District 203, a Daily Herald investigation shows.
