  • Vernon Hills likely to boost sales tax, lower other costs Aug 8, 2014 8:06 AM
    Vernon Hills trustees informally agreed to add a quarter-percent sales tax as of Jan. 1 but offset the effect on residents by lowering utility taxes or paying a portion of recycling fees. The increase is needed to pay a $1.2 million-per-year economic incentive to Westield Hawthorn shopping center and maintain the village's top credit rating. "I think it's the course that makes the most sense," said Finance Director Larry Nakrin.

    The well known Winter Wonderland holiday light show at the Cuneo property in Vernon Hills will be held at least one more time. Loyola University Chicago owns the property but potential development remains in the conceptual stage. "Loyola indicated they are willing to do another (light show) with us, which is awesome," Village Manager John Kalmar said.

    The College of Lake County has hired a new athletic director, Nic Scandrett of Story City, Iowa. Scandrett has worked as assistant commissioner/sports information director for the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference since 2007. He starts at the college on Aug. 13.

    The all-women's non-competitive road bike ride, Venus de Miles, will take place in Lake Forest on August 9th. The event raises funds for Greenhouse Scholars, a non-profit education organization that works with low income college students from Illinois who are exceptionally high performers.

Each scout received a $500 scholarship that is placed in a personal account to be used toward their advancement in scouting.
