    In celebrating 53 years of community service, Renz Addiction Counseling Center is hosting its 7th Annual Epicurean Delight Fundraiser from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Max McGraw Wildlife. Community residents are invited to attend and enjoy such gourmet fare as almond crusted duck salad with blackberry dressing, smoked salmon, pheasant kabobs, sesame chicken and an assortment of vegetarian canapé among other appetizers and desserts by McGraw’s top culinary chef. Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation is located in West Dundee, and sits on 1,200 acres of picturesque hardwoods, prairies, lakes, and streams.

  • ‘What’s in a Scarecrow?’ Find out at St. Charles festival Oct 8, 2014 1:01 AM
    Autumn is here and with it one of the Fox Valley’s most popular events: the Scarecrow Festival in St. Charles. Depending on the weather, between 100,000 and 120,000 people are expected to attend the festival, according to Jason Pawlowski, marketing manager and festival liaison for the St. Charles Convention and Visitors Bureau.

    Maria Torres of Elgin says her college coursework really made a difference in her successfully breaking into the nonprofit world. Torres was among the first graduates of Northern Illinois University's community leadership and civic engagement program, the only one of its kind in Illinois and among only three in the country, school officials said.

    Nomad Theatre Company will hold auditions for "bare," a rock musical for high school and college age, will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, and 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles. Prepare a 1-minute contemporary monologue and approximately 32 bars of a pop or rock song. Video auditions are accepted.

    Elgin Theatre Company will hold auditions for "Leading Ladies." Auditions will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Elgin Academy’s Rider Center. If callbacks are necessary, it will be held from 8 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21.

     
  • Illinois Railway Museum to restore classic Streamliner Oct 3, 2014 7:11 PM
    The Illinois Railway Museum in Union has begun a restoration project planned to return the famous streamlined Electroliner to operational condition in 2017. The museum's Electroliner received an external restoration when it returned to Illinois in the 1980s, but problems with the train's eight electric motors prevented the streamliner from returning to operation. Work is now under way to return the luxury streamliner to operable condition within the next three years. In addition to work on the motors, work is needed on the wheels, trucks, air brakes and air conditioning before it can be operated.

    The Elgin Community College Arts Center will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the classic movie musical "The Sound of Music" on Saturday, Oct. 18, when it presents "Sing-a-Long-a Sound of Music." A preshow Austrian-themed dinner starts at 5 p.m. in Spartan Terrace Restaurant.
