    Maine Township trustees are expected to consider appointing a successor to longtime Assessor Tom Rueckert, who died Tuesday at age 73, at their next meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, at township hall, 1700 Ballard Road in Park Ridge. Township spokesman Dick Barton said the law requires any appointee to be state certified to be an assessor and of the same political party as the person being replaced — in this case, Republican.

    Candidate for governor Bruce Rauner and other top Illinois Republicans will join the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition at a gathering next week to urge Congress to adopt immigration reform. The event — called “Immigration Reform: Bottom-Line 2014” — will be at the Chicago Club on Tuesday. CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, state trade associations and hundreds of Latino and Asian business people will urge a vote on Capitol Hill. They say reform is “politically smart, economically sound, and morally right.” Along with Rauner, GOP leaders expected to attend are former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, former governors Jim Edgar and James Thompson, Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, and Republican legislative leaders Sen. Christine Radogno and Rep. Jim Durkin.

    State and local Republican leaders are once again asking Susanne Atanus to withdraw from the 9th congressional race. Atanus won the GOP primary Tuesday with a 1,400-vote margin and expressed hope the party would come around and back her in the general election against Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky. Those hopes were dashed this week by both the Cook County GOP and the state party. “The Cook County Republican Organization believes that Atanus should drop out of the race,” said Chairman Aaron Del Mar.
