A Daily Herald examination of Island Lake village records reveals details of the financial relationship between village hall and the two activists who successfully pushed to get mayoral hopeful Charles Amrich knocked off April's ballot. In 2012, two companies owned by Daniel Field billed the town for nearly $59,000 in services, while former trustee Louis Sharp's towing company handled more than 200 tows for the police department.

Chickens could become election issue in Fox LakeFeb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Chickens might play a role in the April 9 Fox Lake mayoral election because of a failed proposal to allow residents to raise hens on their property. Supporters of the effort to raise chickens for food and educational purposes say they are upset the board voted 4-2 in January to defeat the measure and will back village board and mayoral challengers in the election.

Last May, when longtime West Chicago alderman Ruben Pineda was appointed to replace the late Mike Kwasman, he became the city's first Hispanic mayor. Pineda said being Hispanic, in a town in which more than 51 percent of its 27,000 residents are also Hispanic, certainly hasn't hurt his cause but in a recent Daily Herald endorsement interview, each of three mayoral candidates discussed the importance of Hispanic leadership.

Amrich hearing set for Feb. 19: Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Island Lake mayoral hopeful Charles Amrich could learn in two weeks if his name will be restored to the spring ballot. Amrich is appealing an electoral board's decision this week to remove him from the ballot, and a hearing has been set for 10:30 a.m. Feb. 19 in Lake County circuit court to review the case.

Charles Amrich knocked off ballot in Island Lake Feb 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Island Lake mayoral hopeful Charles Amrich can't run in the April election because of a $174 overdue garbage bill he paid after he signed his candidacy statement, an electoral board voted. The 2-1 ruling came after two hours of testimony from Amrich, village Finance Director John Little and the two men who tried to get Amrich knocked off the ballot, Daniel Field and Louis Sharp. Amrich quickly left the room after the board's decision because of a family health emergency.

Des Plaines mayoral candidate staying on ballot Jan 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Des Plaines 6th Ward Alderman Mark Walsten will be able to run for mayor in April after all. The city's electoral board Thursday dismissed an objection against Walsten's candidacy after the resident who filed it, Carl Mauter-Hollenbeck, voluntarily rescinded the challenge. Walsten's name will appear on the April 9 ballot along with two others vying for the mayoral post.

With customer care at village hall a top concern in Mundelein's mayoral race, candidate Steve Lentz has proposed using undercover operatives to apply for various permits as a way to observe the process. Two other mayoral candidates, Robin Meier and Wally Frasier, rejected the idea during a Daily Herald endorsement interview Friday.
