  • Grayslake’s Woodview School goes beyond expectations for Halloween treats to troops Nov 5, 2013 4:24 PM
    Two teachers at Woodview School in Grayslake had a little idea for students who went trick-or-treating last week. The kids were asked to bring some of their Halloween treats to school so they could be donated to U.S. troops overseas. But instead of an expected 10 or 15 pounds, 305 pounds of candy arrived by Tuesday's deadline.

    Grayslake Elementary District 46 taxpayers have already spent $2,300 more for the annual school board and administrators conference in downtown Chicago than they did last year. And that's just the registration costs and hotel deposits for the Nov. 22-24 conference. Eight suburban districts have already spent more on the conference than they did last year. So far, 62 suburban districts have registered 532 school board members, administrators and employees at a cost of $307,647.

    It could cost more than $20 million to air-condition five schools at Lake Zurich Unit District 95, according to an estimate provided by the superintendent. “I am not opposed to air conditioning our remaining five buildings,” he recently wrote in a monthly report, “but I do want people to understand the full cost of such an endeavor compared to the potential benefits.” However, a parent leading an online petition says that estimate is incomplete without seeing competitive bids.

Students at Woodview and Meadowview schools in Grayslake stayed home Tuesday last week and had half days the following three days because of the steamy conditions.

    A Grayslake woman and members of the Frederick School PTO were admonished by a Lake County judge Wednesday for using an 11-year-old girl as a pawn in a felony theft case. Elizabeth S. Bako, 42, is accused of stealing more than $10,000 from the group between April 2011 and May 31, 2012.

Christopher Culp, 43, of the 600 block of South Rose Hall Lane in Round Lake, admitted to one count of misdemeanor disorderly conduct for the deal he entered into Tuesday in Lake County circuit court.

    Grayslake Elementary District 46 board members have agreed to raise school fees starting in the 2013-14 academic year. Officials said the fee hikes are needed to generate an extra $30,000 or so in annual revenue. District 46 has been grappling with ways to stop a $2.2 million deficit projected for the 2013-14 budget.
