  • Former Frederick School PTO treasurer in Grayslake pleads guilty to theft Dec 19, 2013 2:37 PM
    A Grayslake woman pleaded guilty in Lake County court Thursday to stealing money from the Frederick Elementary School parent teacher organization while serving as its treasurer. Elizabeth Bako, 42, of the 300 block of Woodland Drive, was sentenced through a negotiated settlement to 24 months of probation and 100 hours of community service after pleading guilty to one count of felony theft. She will also have to pay restitution.

Elizabeth Bako, 42, signed the restitution agreement with the parent teacher organization prior to her trial beginning Jan. 6. Prosecutors said Bako is due back in court Dec. 19 to potentially settle with a plea agreement.

Acting Chief School Business Official Chris Bobek reviewed the proposed 2014 tax levy with elected officials this week. He said he recommends seeking the maximum tax revenue allowed by law next year.     Grayslake Elementary District 46 taxpayers have already spent $2,300 more for the annual school board and administrators conference in downtown Chicago than they did last year. And that's just the registration costs and hotel deposits for the Nov. 22-24 conference. Eight suburban districts have already spent more on the conference than they did last year. So far, 62 suburban districts have registered 532 school board members, administrators and employees at a cost of $307,647.

    It could cost more than $20 million to air-condition five schools at Lake Zurich Unit District 95, according to an estimate provided by the superintendent. “I am not opposed to air conditioning our remaining five buildings,” he recently wrote in a monthly report, “but I do want people to understand the full cost of such an endeavor compared to the potential benefits.” However, a parent leading an online petition says that estimate is incomplete without seeing competitive bids.
