  • Don’t count Bartlett out over one loss Sep 3, 2014 9:25 PM
Following Saturday’s 17-7 loss to Huntley, Bartlett quarterback Jordan Flint reminded his teammates via Twitter that “85 percent of Bartlett football teams have lost their first game and still made playoffs.” Flint is right. No area team has a better track record of making the playoffs after losing its first game than Bartlett.

  • Marmion, St. Edward’s Mattas shine at Elgin Country Club Sep 2, 2014 9:57 PM
The Elgin Country Club golf course played nicely to one of its members and to a bunch of first-timers on Tuesday at the 18-team Country Club Invite, hosted by South Elgin. St. Edward junior Michael Mattas, an ECC member, shot a career-low 69 to win the individual title while Marmion, which didn’t have a single player who had ever seen the 6,500-yard layout, captured the team championship with a 318 on a perfect day for golf.

  • St. Charles North freshman Ernst excels at Elgin meet Sep 2, 2014 10:22 PM
The rest of the field at the Elgin City Classic cross country meet may not have known much about St. Charles North freshman Audrey Ernst before Tuesday, but they certainly do now. Ernst made quite a splash in her varsity debut at Lords Park, exploding onto the scene to win the girls’ individual title by more than 27 seconds over second place finisher Gabby Juarez from Streamwood with a time of 18:02.4.

Early in the second half, Kaneland trailed Dundee-Crown, 1-0. Felippe Speraggi had a wide-open shot that would have tied the game, but hit the crossbar. A couple minutes later, Julian Ajroja scored at the other end, giving the Chargers a 2-0 lead. D-C made it stand up for the nonconference boys soccer victory in Carpentersville Tuesday.

  • Elgin, Dundee-Crown postponed again Aug 29, 2014 11:50 PM
If Malik Dunner’s manager at White Castle is reading this and has not received a call yet from the Dundee-Crown safety, there’s a slider coming your way that’s not on the menu. “I can’t work (today), so I can’t make money,” Dunner said lightheartedly in reference to Saturday’s rescheduled game against Elgin at Memorial Field. “I guess our team will make that money on the field.” Dunner will miss his day shift at the fast food burger hub due to Friday evening’s lightning show in the greater-Elgin area forced the teams to reschedule their Week 1 showdown for 5 p.m. Saturday in Elgin. For the second-straight year the schools have postponed football due to weather.

  • Dundee-Crown puts away Rolling Meadows Aug 27, 2014 10:37 PM
The Dundee-Crown girls’ volleyball team already had some high expectations coming into the season, but it’s beginning to look like more than just preseason hype. The Chargers registered their second straight win with an impressive 25-15, 25-12 nonconference victory over visiting Rolling Meadows (0-1) on Wednesday night.

  • FVC Valley will be a dogfight again Aug 25, 2014 11:50 PM
Jacobs is determined to prove last year’s undefeated Fox Valley Conference Valley Division title was just the beginning of a long reign. Cary-Grove is out to claim its eighth FVC title in 11 seasons, thereby proving its 2013 second-place finish was an anomaly, not the new norm. While the head-to-head matchup between those teams in Algonquin in Week 7 will go a long way to deciding a champion, other hungry teams like deep Huntley, playoff-seasoned Dundee-Crown, reworked Crystal Lake South and improving McHenry won’t concede a thing to the Golden Eagles or Trojans.

  • Steinhaus, Dundee-Crown eye return to playoffs Aug 23, 2014 11:40 AM
The coach who led Dundee-Crown to the postseason for the first time in 19 years has moved on, but the desire to be a playoff football team remains ingrained. Coach Vito Andriola led the Chargers not only to a 6-4 record and a playoff berth before he left to take the vacant Grant job, he led the program back to respectability. New coach Mike Steinhaus, a proud D-C graduate who served as Andriola’s offensive coordinator, aims to keep the program in the thick of the playoff race on an annual basis.

In their first tournament since the departure of the Fox Valley area’s top golfer from a year ago, the Rockets finished in second place in the Larkin Invitational at The Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin on Wednesday.
