  • Jacobs caps a perfect FVC Valley season Feb 24, 2015 11:23 PM
It’s one thing for a team to say that it wants to march through a Fox Valley Conference boys basketball season undefeated prior to its inception. But it’s another thing for a team to actually make due on its goal in the fervor it was done after Jacobs’ 53-35 win over rival Dundee-Crown at the Eagles Nest Tuesday marked a perfect 10-0 mark in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play.

  • Boylan ends Dundee-Crown’s season Feb 23, 2015 10:21 PM
Dundee-Crown’s girls basketball team didn’t lose Monday night for lack of effort or skill. The Chargers hung with a bigger and more experienced Rockford Boylan team through the first half but a buzzer-beating 3-pointer and the Titans’ subsequent third-quarter blitz was too much for D-C to overcome in a 65-43 loss in the Class 4A Rockford Guilford sectional semifinals.

  • Cullen, Barone shine with championships Feb 21, 2015 11:38 PM
Hail to the champions! Knowing that time was running out on their high school careers, and the chances of lifting a big trophy were down to just one more wrestling match, Michael Cullen and Eric Barone turned in the performance of their prep lives Saturday night and earned the first state titles of their careers at State Farm Arena.

  • Don’t expect Huntley to be looking ahead Feb 22, 2015 8:24 PM
Mark Smith, Tom Dineen and Randy Weibel could give Steve Raethz some good advice right now, not that the veteran Huntley girls basketball coach needs it. Take nothing for granted. Smith’s Burlington Central team, Dineen’s Stevenson squad and Weibel’s Hononegah team, all state-ranked girls basketball teams, were upset Friday night in regional finals. While that didn’t happen to Raethz and his Huntley squad, the Red Raiders know all too well the end of the season is a loss away.

  • Cary-Grove’s Gomez impressive at state Feb 19, 2015 10:05 PM
While tournament favorites Michael Cullen, Eric Barone and Christian Brunner dominated their first-day tournament opponents, the story at the IHSA Class 3A individual state wrestling tournament Thursday still has to be of Gomez, the Cary-Grove senior. The Trojans’ heavyweight did some wrecking business of his own at State Farm Arena, and in doing so has now set up a date with Brian Ditchman (40-3) of Lincoln-Way Central) in one of several key quarterfinal bouts to take place Friday at 11 a.m.

  • Dundee-Crown nabs first regional since 2003 Feb 19, 2015 11:01 PM
Sarah Miller was a sophomore playing basketball at Mundelein High School, and most of the current Dundee-Crown girls basketball players hadn’t touched more than a nerf ball the last time the Chargers won a regional championship. But all that changed at Elgin’s Chesbrough Field House Thursday night when D-C beat District 300 rival Jacobs 57-50 in the Class 4A Elgin regional title game, D-C’s first piece of postseason hardware since 2003.

  • Cary-Grove’s Cullen a sectional champ again Feb 14, 2015 10:55 PM
You would be hard pressed to find a better two-day performance at the Barrington wrestling sectional than the one Michael Cullen turned in. With a characteristic flourish, Cullen did it again. The Cary-Grove senior left the competition in his wake on the way to a third sectional title in four years to send the three-time state medalist into next weekend’s Class 3A state tournament as one of the favorites at 120 pounds when things begin in Champaign on Thursday.

For the eighth consecutive season, Cary-Grove, which also has swimmers from District 155 schools Crystal Lake South, Prairie Ridge and Crystal Lake Central, claimed the FVC title Saturday at Woodstock North. Scoring 356 points, the Trojans easily defeated second place McHenry, which scored 285 points.

It was a very good day for Huntley’s wrestling team Friday in Barrington. After finishing far off the pace of Fox Valley Conference rival Jacobs at the Rockford East regional last weekend the Red Raiders produced a near-perfect effort on Friday to send four wrestlers into Saturday’s semifinals where one more victory will send the quartet in search of travel plans to Champaign for the state tournament.
