  • Grayslake North’s Booker streaks past FVC field May 16, 2014 11:13 PM
If you blinked you missed Grayslake North standout sprinter Titus Booker. Booker sprinted past the field at Friday night’s Fox Valley Conference meet held at Crystal Lake Central, winning the 100 meters in 11.06 and the 200 in a clocking of 22.20. “I just ran with my heart tonight and it worked out very well,” said the talented Knights junior. “I knew it would be good competition tonight so I trained hard. I feel very confident going into the sectionals next week.” McHenry, led by junior distance standout Jesse Reiser, claimed the conference championship with a score of 103.50.

  • Little change to Fox Valley postseason May 16, 2014 9:39 PM
New location, same teams. The Class 4A baseball sectional held last season at Huntley shifts to McHenry this year, but little else has changed. Three of the four regionals within the sectional complex contain the same five teams and the fourth has only one lineup alteration, according to pairings released this week.

  • Controlling out of control games no easy task for any coach May 14, 2014 8:26 PM
What’s a coach to do? Your team is ahead of the opponent, say, 12-0 after two innings. You know if your team keeps playing it straight at it might be 20-0, or worse, by the time the fifth inning rolls around and the slaughter rule takes effect. So what’s a coach to do? Some will say tough, that’s the way it is, and do nothing except let the game play out. Others will have runners leave early, or bunt back to the pitcher, or have their hitters intentionally swing at bad pitches — anything to get it over quicker and not embarrass the other team.

  • Raby’s timing just right for Dundee-Crown May 13, 2014 8:21 PM
Dundee-Crown sophomore Ashley Raby doesn’t always realize the time she has on the soccer field. Most of the time that would be bad thing, taking shots from farther out than necessary. But for one time Tuesday, Raby’s lack of patience paid dividends. Raby’s shot from the top of the penalty area hit the bottom of the crossbar and went in for the game’s only goal in a 1-0 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division victory over Jacobs.

  • Cary-Grove stays on track, claims FVC victory May 8, 2014 11:28 PM
The sight of a wobbly, dizzy Morgan Schulz could have made Cary-Grove’s girls track team ... well, wobbly, dizzy. Instead, despite the absence of their junior star, the Trojans turned in a sick performance in the Fox Valley Conference meet at Grayslake North on Thursday night. Cary-Grove ran away with the championship, totaling 134 points to easily outdistance runner-up Huntley (97). Crystal Lake South (78), Jacobs (65.5) and Crystal Lake Central (63) rounded out the top five. Schulz ran the semifinals of the 200-meter dash, then was sent home due to what Cary-Grove coach Mark Anderson called dehydration.
