    Representatives of the Citizens Utility Board will be in Des Plaines Wednesday night to answer questions about utility expenses. CUB, a nonprofit consumer group, is sponsoring the session with the city of Des Plaines where residents will be able to get a free one-on-one analysis by CUB professionals on how to spot billing errors and avoid common pitfalls and scams.

Thanks to a demonstration from the Structural Engineers of Illinois, Sarah now has a basic understanding of how skyscrapers, including the John Hancock Center and Willis Tower, use steel bracing to keep from moving in the wind and falling down.

    The Des Plaines Public Library Board recently approved a $6.26 million budget for the 2013 calendar year, which includes a 1.5 percent reduction in the levy amount — roughly $95,000 — over this year's budget. The board did consider a larger cut, but "that would have meant cutting staff," library Director Holly Sorensen said.

    After three years of austerity measures, Des Plaines is finally out of a financial sinkhole it dug itself through years of overspending, overtaxing and overextending the city’s debt, 3rd Ward Alderman Matt Bogusz says. City officials began discussing the proposed 2012 budget Tuesday night. Among the highlights are a 0 percent increase to the property tax levy over the previous year’s levy for the second year in a row, no layoffs, a reduction in the city’s debt load — down from $70 million to $63.5 million — and a projected general fund balance of 34 percent of operating expenses at the end of the 2012 fiscal year.

    The Des Plaines City Council this week gave their approval to Mayor Marty Moylan’s appointees for two vacant seats on the Des Plaines Public Library board. Richard Pope and Vincent Rangel will replace library board members Myrtle Klebe and John Robinson, and serve until June 30, 2014.
