A pictorial history book with more than 200 vintage images of Des Plaines will be released Nov. 26 in time for the holiday shopping season. "It was very interesting to find out how much Des Plaines has changed over the years ... ," said author David Wittingham. "Early Des Plaines was a tourist town. It was a destination."

The Friends of the Des Plaines Public Library used book sale will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, (members-only night); 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29; and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, at the library.The sale includes a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children, plus videotapes, audiobooks, DVDs and CDs.

While other libraries have put their bookmobiles to rest, the one operated by Arlington Heights Memorial Library is still going strong, making roughly 50 stops every month. It's a way of putting citizens in touch with books -- especially as the library does not have any branches.

Des Plaines library approves $6.2 million budget for 2013Aug 29, 2012 12:00 AM
The Des Plaines Public Library Board recently approved a $6.26 million budget for the 2013 calendar year, which includes a 1.5 percent reduction in the levy amount — roughly $95,000 — over this year's budget. The board did consider a larger cut, but "that would have meant cutting staff," library Director Holly Sorensen said.

Awash with surplus funds, the Des Plaines Public Library is planning to make some improvements to its building next year. After a few years of belt-tightening, the library seems to be out of the woods with healthier finances heading into the 2013 calendar year, Library Director Holly Sorensen said.

After three years of austerity measures, Des Plaines is finally out of a financial sinkhole it dug itself through years of overspending, overtaxing and overextending the city’s debt, 3rd Ward Alderman Matt Bogusz says. City officials began discussing the proposed 2012 budget Tuesday night. Among the highlights are a 0 percent increase to the property tax levy over the previous year’s levy for the second year in a row, no layoffs, a reduction in the city’s debt load — down from $70 million to $63.5 million — and a projected general fund balance of 34 percent of operating expenses at the end of the 2012 fiscal year.

The Des Plaines Park District Creative Corners Preschool welcomed Courtney O’Keefe, preschool liaison for the Des Plaines Public Library, to class on Sept. 26 and 27. O’Keefe presented a half-hour program on trains to both the Terrific 3’s and the Fantastic 4’s and 5’s.

The Des Plaines City Council this week gave their approval to Mayor Marty Moylan’s appointees for two vacant seats on the Des Plaines Public Library board. Richard Pope and Vincent Rangel will replace library board members Myrtle Klebe and John Robinson, and serve until June 30, 2014.
