    Representatives of the Citizens Utility Board will be in Des Plaines Wednesday night to answer questions about utility expenses. CUB, a nonprofit consumer group, is sponsoring the session with the city of Des Plaines where residents will be able to get a free one-on-one analysis by CUB professionals on how to spot billing errors and avoid common pitfalls and scams.

    Five-year-old Sarah Chitavi of Des Plaines can easily rattle off what she learned Saturday during the Family Science Expo, held at the Des Plaines Public Library. Thanks to a demonstration from the Structural Engineers of Illinois, Sarah now has a basic understanding of how skyscrapers, including the John Hancock Center and Willis Tower, use steel bracing to keep from moving in the wind and falling down.

"It was very interesting to find out how much Des Plaines has changed over the years ... ," said author David Wittingham. "Early Des Plaines was a tourist town. It was a destination."

    The Friends of the Des Plaines Public Library used book sale will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, (members-only night); 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29; and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, at the library.The sale includes a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books for adults and children, plus videotapes, audiobooks, DVDs and CDs.

  • Des Plaines library approves $6.2 million budget for 2013 Aug 29, 2012 10:27 PM
    The Des Plaines Public Library Board recently approved a $6.26 million budget for the 2013 calendar year, which includes a 1.5 percent reduction in the levy amount — roughly $95,000 — over this year's budget. The board did consider a larger cut, but "that would have meant cutting staff," library Director Holly Sorensen said.
