  • Glenbard West takes title on new Kaneland course Sep 20, 2014 5:56 PM
    Glenbard West won the title Saturday at Kaneland’s annual Larry Eddington Invitational, a championship that might not have happened without a couple friendly Kaneland officials. Kaneland moved the meet from its traditional home at Elburn Woods to the Knights’ high school campus. The Knights are hosting a Class 2A sectional this fall and wanted to test out their course. Glenbard West pulled up Saturday as it has in years past to Elburn Woods — only to get a sinking feeling when there wasn’t another soul around.

  • Wheeling’s a winner at Warren Sep 20, 2014 5:53 PM
    There was quite a bit of uncertainty between the Warren and Wheeling boys cross country teams following the Warren Invitational Saturday morning. Everybody knew the finish was too close to call between the Blue Devils and the Wildcats in the 20-team meet on the 2.95-mile course at Warren High School. But when all was said and done, Wheeling had pulled off an exciting 56-59 victory over heartbroken Warren as the Wildcats continued so show great signs of improvement and growth in the early stages of the new season.

     
  • Higuchi’s record effort powers Fremd at Warren Sep 20, 2014 6:01 PM
    As the old saying goes, “it’s the little things that count.” That details-first approach to practice and meets has really helped the Fremd girls cross country team, and the determined Vikings ran to the championship of the 17-team Warren Invitational Saturday morning by a solid 63-88 count to top the host Blue Devils. Not only was Saturday a great day for Fremd as a team, but Ayako Higuchi set a record on the 2.95-mile course on the grounds of the high school with a winning time of 17:12.16.

    Conant senior Zach Dale entered the season as one of top returning runners in Illinois, and on Saturday at the Peoria Notre Dame Richard Spring Invitational he lived up to his billing. Dale cruised to the title in 14:29 on the state course at Detweiller Park. Close behind him in an impressive second-place run was Hersey senior David Rodriguez (14:34).

    Gabby Sanchez led the way with a winning effort of 19:25 over the 3-mile course at Patriot Park to help Wheeling in a 23-33 decision over Wheeling on Thursday in Mid-Suburban East girls cross country.

    Boys cross country Palatine d. Schaumburg: Palatine junior Zach Michael took first place, leading the Pirates to a 23-38 boys cross country win over Schaumburg on the Saxons’ 3.1-mile home course at Hoover Elementary on Thursday. Wheeling d. Meadows: Rolling Meadows’ Colin Pisc-tello had the top performance, but Wheeling’s superpack led by Joe Swiech took spots 2 through 9 in a 20-43 victory on the 3-mile course at Patriot Park.

     
  • Cross country, volleyball lead the fall charge at Harper Sep 19, 2014 12:31 AM
    It has been a busy first month of the school year for the Harper athletic programs. Among the most active have been the men’s cross country program, which holds the top spot in this week’s NJCAA Division III national poll, and the women’s volleyball team, which has improved from its No. 10 preseason ranking to No. 9 in the most recent poll.

  • Girls cross country / Lake County roundup Sep 16, 2014 1:01 AM
    Vernon Hills wins: Vernon Hills defeated both Grant (26-29) and North Chicago (15-50). Vivian Overbeck of Vernon Hills took first place with an 18:33 while Grant’s top finisher was Madison Romig. She took third place with a 19:03. Stevenson wins: Stevenson defeated Antioch (18-45), Mundelein (17-44) and Round Lake (18-45) at Half Day Forest Preserve. Isabelle Sparreo of Stevenson took first place with an 18:11. Tessa Furlong of Antioch placed third with a 19:22 while Luvia Chavarria of Round Lake was fourth with a 19:28 and Abby Grein of Mundelein was sixth with a 19:52.
