    On Saturday in New York, the three-time defending NJCAA Division III men’s cross country national champions made it four in a row. Paced by sophomores Juan Barajas and Brennan Albuck, Harper College once again ran to victory in the national meet hosted by Finger Lakes Community College at Bruce Bridgman Cross Country Course in Canadaigua, N.Y. Barajas won the individual championship in 27:29.9 with Albuck close behind, taking second and finishing in 27:32.5.

    There were a lot of positives for Lake County’s boys cross country teams Saturday afternoon as runners attacked the 3-mile Detweiller Park course at the 69th annual boys cross country state meet. Vernon Hills sophomore Shane Williamson proved that he will be a force to be reckoned with for years to come as Williamson placed third in Class 2A in 14:37 to smash his previous best time by a whopping 17 seconds.

    With a lot of confidence and plenty of determination, Lakes junior Kortney Schardt was ready to make headlines Saturday morning at the 36th annual girls cross country state meet. Schardt proved once again that she was ready for prime time as she ran a personal best time of 17:33, breaking her own school record by seven seconds on her way to a fantastic seventh place in the Class 2A state finals on the 3-mile Detweiller Park course. Yorkville continued its dominance with a fourth consecutive team title as the Foxes (79 points) easily outdistanced runner-up squad Lake Forest (165) for top honors.

    PEORIA – All eyes in Saturday’s boys Class 1A cross country championship race were on Fithian Oakwood’s Jon Davis, and for good reason. He lapped at least a few competitors in the field in his repeat run to a state title at Detweiller Park. But behind him and runner-up Eric Ponder of Tuscola, who was 42 seconds in arrears, was the fresh face in the competition, Aurora Christian’s Tanner Chada. He raced to a third-place finish in 15:01.92 seconds, and then said he left something on the course on a windblown, cold day.

    PEORIA — Maybe it’s the running, and the way the body responds. Cross country runners often appear to have taken their last breath in the moments after crossing the finish line, but a half-hour later, they’re ready to do it again. Geneva’s McKenzie Altmayer is an example of that ability to rebound. She finished 11th — eighth in team scoring to help Geneva to a 12th-place finish in Saturday’s Class 3A championship race — was typically exhausted, and then all smiles not long after.

    Palatine was on the outside looking in at last year’s Class 3A girls cross country state meet. The Pirates finished a distant fourth, one spot away from a state trophy. But this year Palatine rose to the occasion, placing five girls in the top 37 to secure second place with 91 points at Detweiller Park in Peoria. “Such a difference from a year ago,” said Palatine coach Joe Parks of the Pirates’ drive to a 14th state trophy. “I knew it could go either way, but the girls pulled it off and almost won the title.”

    From the start of the boys cross country season all signs pointed toward an epic battle for the Class 3A state title between McHenry senior Jesse Reiser and Conant senior Zach Dale. And the race proved to be instant classic. On a clear and crisp fall afternoon Reiser and Dale separated from a cluster of five and locked horns in the final 800 meters, with Reiser using one final surge with 400 meters remaining to secure the state championship in 14 minutes, 10 seconds at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

    On Saturday afternoon, the Harper men’s and women’s cross country teams will take to the start line for the last time this season in the NJCAA Divsion III national championships, hosted by Finger Lakes Community College at Bruce Bridgman Cross Country Course in Canadaigua, N.Y. Both the men’s and women’s teams come into the race atop the NJCAA Division III polls. Coach Jim Macnider, now in his fourth year at Harper, believes his teams are where they belong. “I think we deserve to be ranked No. 1,” he said. “This is the most talented team I’ve had.”
