    Glenbard East cleared the final hurdle in its quest to leave the DuPage Valley Conference for the Upstate Eight Conference. Behind Monday's 6-1 vote by the Glenbard High School District 87 School Board in Glen Ellyn, Glenbard East will sever its 30-year ties with the powerhouse athletic league in hopes of finding a more competitive situation. Glenbard East is now free to join the UEC, although the vote did not adhere to a specific timeline.

    When he leaves work each day, Libertyville cross country coach Mark Buesing crosses the state border to his home in Bristol, Wis. In three months, the science teacher will really be crossing the border. Buesing is traveling to Greenland for two weeks in April to participate in NASA's Operation IceBridge, a six-year mission to map polar ice in unprecedented detail to better understand processes that connect the polar regions with the global climate system.

The Augustana senior distance standout and Warren High school graduate has been named as the Vikings' "Most Valuable Runner" for the second straight year. She has been the No. 1 performer for veteran head coach Fred Whiteside's team in each of the past two seasons.

    The Illinois High School Association has decided four Sudanese students can play sports, but their high school is on probation. The IHSA ruled Monday that three basketball players and one cross-country runner, all juniors, can compete for tiny Mooseheart High School in Batavia.

    Katherine Filippo is an English major at Illinois Wesleyan with an emphasis in writing. The former Libertyville standout sure wrote a great script for her final cross country season in Bloomington. She helped the Titans reach the NCAA finals for the first time in school history. Clocked in a time of 23:22.3 for 188th place, Filippo helped the Titans finish 24th in the NCAA Division III cross country championships at the LaVern Gibson Course in Terre Haute, Ind. "Qualifying for nationals was a goal that we had been working toward for the past four years," said Filippo, who also worked as an intern in the sports information department at IWU.

    St. Francis' Hilary Halford earned some elite status a little more than a week ago. The former Carmel runner now running for the Joliet university became an All-American in cross country in Spokane, Wash. Halford placed 17th out of over 300 runners at the national meet, becoming the first All-American for cross country in St. Francis history. She was clocked in 18:21 on the 5K course.

    In just his second season at the helm of the Harper College men's cross country team, Jim Macnider guided the Hawks to the program's second straight NJCAA Division III title Saturday on the campus of SUNY-Delhi. The Hawks placed four runners in the top 20, including individual champion Troy Cunningham. "I'm extremely fortunate to have the coaching staff I have," Cunninham said, referring to Macnider. "(He's) part of the reason I chose to come to Harper."

    Make it two straight for Jim Macnider and the Harper men's cross country program. The Hawks, led by an individual championship from Troy Cunningham, repeated as NJCAA champions with a dominant performance Saturday in Delhi, N.Y. Harper finished with 59 points, well ahead of runner-up Gloucester (N.J.) 98 and Delhi (115). "I'm proud of our guys, and happy for them," Macnider said.

    The top-ranked Harper College men's cross-country team looks to defend its NJCAA Division III national championship Saturday in Delhi, NY. "It should be a good meet," said second-year Harper coach Jim Macnider. "They're looking forward to running the race." Region IV meet champion Troy Cunningham (Conant) has a legitimate chance of winning the race. The course record is just a shade over 27 minutes, a time Macnider thinks might be within reach for his top runner. "I don't see why Troy can't beat 27 minutes," Macnider said.

    It was a great end to the season for the Whitney cross country family of Vernon Hills last weekend at the Class 2A state meet in Peoria. First-year Vernon Hills boys coach Mark Whitney not only got to help guide his son Kyle to a solid 52nd-place showing on the storied 3-mile Detweiller Park course, but he also got to watch his daughter Kristen run to an impressive 36th-place finish in the girls meet.

    Jacobs sophomore Lauren Van Vlierbergen and Cary-Grove sophomore Talia Duzey both missed qualifying for last year’s cross country state meet. This year both made up for it, as Van Vlierbergen and Duzey were on target at the Class 3A state cross country meet at Detweiller Park in Peoria

    Lake Zurich started the season slowly, but the Bears sure finished the season with a bang. Senior Alex Milner (14:42) and junior Trevor Kuehr (14:46) set the tone by making all-state with 16th- and 20th-place finishes in leading Lake Zurich to fourth place in the team race with 203 points in the Class 3A boys cross country state meet at Detweiller Park.
