Carmel’s boys basketball team did not at all resemble a team that had just 3 wins and 6 losses coming into Tuesday’s action at the Hinkle Holiday Classic at Jacobs. The Corsairs were hitting on all cylinders as they shot 30-of-54 (56 percent) from the field and turned ball over just 8 times in a convincing 85-79 win over Bartlett in third round pool play.

  • Jacobs outlasts Bartlett in OT Dec 20, 2014 10:55 PM
After Bartlett’s Jordan Anderson hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 55 and it to overtime, it seemed like the Hawks would have the momentum going into the extra session. • Bartlett stymies East Aurora Dec 19, 2014 11:56 PM
Nobody takes any pity on you in the Upstate Eight Conference. East Aurora entered Friday’s UEC Valley boys basketball game at Bartlett short-handed after senior point guard Lawrence Stewart strained his back in Thursday’s loss to Glenbard East. He was joined on the bench by leading scorer Adrian Smith, who remains academically ineligible. Sensing their chance to pounce, the Hawks and coach Jim Wolfsmith showed East Aurora ever-changing defenses that caused confusion, havoc and 22 turnovers in a 72-57 victory.

  • Bartlett rolls to another UEC Valley win Dec 13, 2014 9:13 PM
The message from Bartlett boys basketball coach Jim Wolfsmith to his team before Saturday night’s Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division game against visiting Waubonsie Valley? Don’t let last week happen again. The Hawks heard that message loud and clearly and cruised to a 51-27 win over the Warriors, which came on the heels of a big win Friday night against Neuqua Valley.

  • Bartlett hands Neuqua Valley first loss Dec 13, 2014 12:13 AM
After two-straight overtime wins and a tough loss in a game the Bartlett boys basketball team felt it should have won last week against Glenbard East, a quick glance at the schedule told the Hawks it wasn’t going to get any easier with undefeated Upstate Eight Valley leader Neuqua Valley coming to town Friday. But after nearly a week off to rest their legs and implement a well-planned defensive scheme in practice, the host Hawks didn’t look like a team desperate for a mulligan. The Hawks clearly wanted to shut down and send a message to the Wildcats in a 59-54 win.

It was the Hawks’ first conference loss as they fell to 5-4 and 2-1.

And that’s when things brightened up for the Huskies. In battle between top-20 teams in the Daily Herald girls basketball rankings, No. 11 Hersey came away with a 44-30 triumph over the No. 20 Hawks in Arlington Heights.

  • Jacobs flexes muscles at mega quad Dec 6, 2014 9:55 PM
When he was a freshman, Cody Ferencz endured a 7-win season — with the prospects of ever reaching double-digit victories in his career at Jacobs looking dim. After sweeping all three duals Saturday at Glenbard West, Ferencz and his teammates have propelled the Golden Eagles’ overall record to a dazzling 7-0 — and the prospects are looking up for even bigger and better things. The Eagles had far too much firepower for Bartlett, Joliet West and the host and were the best of the five clubs competing at the annual Hilltopper Mega Quad in Glen Ellyn, setting up an important Fox Valley Conference dual meet Thursday at McHenry. The Hilltoppers went 2-2, while Joilet West ended 2-1. Hersey, with heavyweight and 2014 state qualifier Tyler Cooke sidelined by the flu, finished 1-2. A shorthanded Bartlett was 0-3.
