  • Cary-Grove’s Langanis continues to develop Feb 27, 2015 11:00 PM
Cary-Grove junior Cooper Langanis certainly does not lack aggressiveness. In the preliminaries of the boys swimming and diving state meet, Langanis was competing in the longest race of the meet, the 500-yard freestyle. His first 100 yards of the race were completed in 51.10 seconds, the kind of speed that would make many a sprinter proud. The rest of the race didn’t go as well, but Langanis still came close to his seed time in a 25th-place finish (4:43.48). Earlier, Langanis also finished 25th in his other individual race, the 200 free.

  • South Elgin holds off Bartlett Feb 27, 2015 11:07 PM
The regular season finale at South Elgin between the host Storm and visiting Bartlett had a postseason atmosphere as the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division boys basketball rivals squared off for the second time this season on Friday. After Bartlett ran away with a 75-53 home win earlier this month, the rematch remained tight right to the end. With the Storm holding a 3-point lead, the Hawk leading scorer Ryan DiCanio was open and got one last shot from deep to try and force overtime. South Elgin’s Matt Smith, one of three players with 9 points to lead the Storm, was sitting on the bench after fouling out seconds before, and he breathed a sigh of relief when DiCanio’s shot missed allowing the Storm to win 43-40 and snap a 4-game skid.

  • Geneva pulls away from Bartlett Feb 25, 2015 7:19 AM
Grace Loberg didn’t sell popcorn in the concession stand before Tuesday’s Class 4A Geneva sectional semifinal. She didn’t sing the National Anthem before the game or sweep the floor at halftime. And that pretty much ends the list of what Geneva’s 6-foot-2 sophomore center didn’t do. Loberg dominated the game on both ends against No. 6 seed Bartlett, filling up the stat sheet with 23 points, 14 rebounds, 5 blocked shots and 5 steals in the Vikings’ 49-40 victory.

Then senior Matt Lee swam a solid 100-yard breaststroke, finished second, beat the state qualifying time and earned his second consecutive trip to the state finals.

  • Don’t expect Huntley to be looking ahead Feb 22, 2015 8:24 PM
Mark Smith, Tom Dineen and Randy Weibel could give Steve Raethz some good advice right now, not that the veteran Huntley girls basketball coach needs it. Take nothing for granted. Smith’s Burlington Central team, Dineen’s Stevenson squad and Weibel’s Hononegah team, all state-ranked girls basketball teams, were upset Friday night in regional finals. While that didn’t happen to Raethz and his Huntley squad, the Red Raiders know all too well the end of the season is a loss away.

  • Metea Valley turns the tables on Bartlett Feb 20, 2015 11:27 PM
The last time Metea Valley played Bartlett back in the second week of January the Mustangs were in the midst of a 7-game losing streak and lost by 11 points as the Hawks’ Ryan DiCanio set a single-game school scoring record with 43 points. • Bartlett falls at East Aurora Feb 13, 2015 11:28 PM
Bartlett was in prime position to impact the Upstate Eight Valley boys basketball conference race. But it was not meant to be Friday night at East Aurora. With league-leading Neuqua Valley on the wrong side of a one-sided game at West Aurora, the Hawks could have drawn within a game of the Wildcats. But the host Tomcats trailed only once and held off a furious Bartlett rally in the fourth quarter to snap a nine-game conference losing streak with a 51-49 victory in Aurora.

I'm so grateful.”
