    Bartlett High School students invent ‘Fittastick’ appApr 5, 2014 12:00 AM
    After clinching the Verizon Innovative App Challenge, a team of Bartlett High School students are on their way to turning their concept into a live smartphone app. A tech mentor arrived at the school Friday to help students build Fittastick, which combines fitness stats with social networking. “It tends to open students’ eyes that there are opportunities outside of the walls of the school,” said Phil Church, their Bartlett teacher.

    The Bartlett softball team Friday got everything it lacked earlier in the week, and with it won its first game of the Play It Again Sports Tournament in Clarksville, Tenn. Senior Holly Pagan fired a 1-hitter with 7 strikeouts and 1 walk and added a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a home run, double and 2 RBI as the Hawks (3-1) downed previously unbeaten Bourbon County (Ky.) 9-0.

    A jersey retirement ceremony at the high school level is a rarity, but so are men like 2007 Bartlett graduate Lenny Gulczynski. His alma mater honored the late Pfc. Gulczynski on Thursday by retiring his No. 15 prior to the boys volleyball match against the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, a contest dominated by Lenny’s 6-foot-5 “little” brother, Mike, Jr.

    Bartlett girls soccer coach Ben Beary has been preaching to his team to run to the furthest post in practice over and over and over again this season. Thursday night’s 2-0 nonconference win over Jacobs may have finally bolstered what Beary’s invested into this spring. When the Jacobs defense lacked discretion on the backside and Kendra Videckis in possession up the right sideline 9 minutes into the game, freshman Sarah Jurek practiced what her coach has been preaching and made the Golden Eagles pay.

    It would have been a hard April Fool’s joke to swallow for South Elgin if one of its 31 shots didn’t go in during a 1-0 Upstate Eight Valley girls soccer win over rival Bartlett at Millennium Field Tuesday. After all, the Storm’s defense didn’t allow much to get to goalie Jordan Vaulkner and South Elgin outshout the Hawks by 27. But Bartlett’s best antics behind goalkeeper Amanda Lozada’s 17 saves brought South Elgin to the brink and as Storm coach Tiffany Disher said it for her team, “if (Bartlett) were to break away and just get one, it would be a sad story for us.”

    Most teams start every season with a list of goals. At the top of that list was for the South Elgin girls soccer team was to win its own tournament. The Storm accomplished that feat Thursday by beating West Chicago, 3-0, in the championship game at Millennium Field.

    St. Francis senior Robert Smith entered his fourth year on the varsity roster Wednesday evening, and the veteran setter got right to work as his team’s top distributor. Smith dished out 25 assists as seven players finished with at least one kill during a 25-13, 25-16 win over visiting Bartlett in the season opener for both teams.
