    Forty-seven school districts in the state, mostly in northern Illinois, have spent nearly $50 million over the past six years on taxi services, with Northwest Suburban High School District 214 topping the list, according to contracts obtained by watchdog group For the Good of Illinois. Officials from various school districts say taxis are sometimes the best way to transport students who have special needs, are homeless or vocational education students.

    Maybe Dryden School Principal Robert Jares never thought his career as an educator made great theater, but his students beg to differ. Jares' story was one of several acted out at Metropolis recently, based on biographies written by second-graders of adults they knew. "I've never written a play before," said Megan Snow, a student at Ivy Hill School, "but it was cool to see our ideas acted out."

Dwyer Ave. Similar signs will be placed throughout the village as part of the Idle Free Arlington educational and awareness campaign.

    The Arlington Heights Council of PTAs is offering high school seniors who attended District 25 schools for at least three years the chance to apply for an Achievement Scholarship. More than 300 scholarships have been awarded to graduating high school seniors, worth more than $350,000.
