Fort Payne DAR offers American History Essay Contest

If you are a fifth- through eighth-grade student in one of the public, private or parochial schools or home school environments, you are invited to enter the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution annual American History Essay contest.

The Naperville chapter, Fort Payne, of the NSDAR sponsors this contest annually. This national contest can lead to awards and recognition countrywide.

The 2020-21 topic is the "Boston Massacre."

March 5, 2020 marked the 250th anniversary of the Boston Massacre, considered to be a pivotal event that paved the way to the American Revolution.

Contestants should imagine they are living in Boston and after witnessing the events of March 5, they are to describe their family's discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British king and Parliament.

Fifth-grade students are limited to 300 to 600 words. Sixth- through eighth-grade students are limited to 600 to 1,000 words.

Judging will be based on historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of the material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation, neatness and that it is the student's own work.

Students may submit their essays directly to Fort Payne Chapter or through their class.

Essays must be received no later than Nov. 1, 2020 for inclusion in this year's contest.

For additional information and how to submit your essay, contact Elizabeth Breese at (630) 927-4381 or FtPayneessay@gmail.com.
