Learn about the Miss Elgin contest of 1925

When the first Miss Elgin pageant debuted in 1925 its groundbreaking bathing suit competition was labeled "demoralizing" and "debasing" by some.

Despite the criticism, the contest drew over 5,000 attendees.

Join Daily Herald columnist and Elgin historian Jerry Turnquist as he shares photos of the contest and re-tells the story of the event including the winner's ultimate advancement to the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City.

The program will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 30, in the Meadows Community Rooms A-B at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave. in downtown Elgin.

Attendees are encouraged to register at the library's website at www.gailborden.info.
