Arlington Heights woman celebrates her 100th birthday

• Marian Jacobs of Arlington Heights marked her 100th birthday on Sunday, March 25. Jacobs celebrated her centennial birthday with a Mass on Saturday, March 10, in the Odean Johnson Chapel, at the Moorings of Arlington Heights. Her godson, Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield, presided. More than 50 members of Jacobs' family were in attendance, including her five children, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, along with many of her friends from the Moorings.

When asked what her secret to longevity is, Jacobs always replies, "Ivory soap."

• Brandon Christopher, 17, a student at Streamwood High School, was named to the 2017-2018 Upstate Eight Conference Academic All-Conference Team during Streamwood High School's Winter Athletic Awards held Wednesday, March 7, at the school. Christopher received the award for his outstanding athletic performance, wholesome competitiveness and exceptional sportsmanship and scholarship.

"The distinction is received by athletes within the conference who have achieved at least a 3.5 GPA," says Paul Kowalyszyn, Streamwood High School head basketball coach. "Brandon has not only been named to the Academic All-Conference Team, also, he has always been a supportive teammate and his enthusiasm is unwavering. I am extremely proud of his efforts to continuously improve, not only on the basketball court, but also in the classroom. He is an exemplary example of a student-athlete."

Christopher is an honor roll student, Physical Education Student Leader, Junior Class Council member, Key Club member and an Alexian Brothers youth board Community Ambassador.

• District 21 Superintendent Kate Hyland and board President Phil Pritzker acknowledge the hard work and outstanding service of its licensed educators each year through Celebrating Excellence. These follow staff members were recognized for their exemplary efforts in demonstrating and advancing District 21 values and characteristics. Congratulations to this year's honorees: From Cooper Middle School: Amber Companey, Colleen Conley, Lauren Hirsch, Dennis Lubash, Heather Renkar and Jenny Stash; Frost Elementary School: Charlie Fabrikant; Hawthorne Early Childhood School: Sofia Flores; Holmes Middle School: Sharen Bermudez; Kilmer Elementary School: Tracy Snelson; London Middle School: Amy McCall-Alip; Riley Elementary School: Sandy Mills, Karen Ditthardt and Luiza Kozikowska; Tarkington Elementary School: Caron Normyle; and Twain Elementary School: Amanda Zito.

• Barrington High School girls soccer coach Ryan Stengren was named Coach of the Year by the Illinois High School Association for girls soccer. Coaches of the Year are selected based on results of the 2016-17 school year, as well as other elements such as career success, sportsmanship and contributions to the sport. Coach Stengren has been the Barrington High School varsity girls soccer coach for the past 11 years. The team won the Class 3A state championship during the 2016-17 school year.
