Sedgebrook's Chef is the Champion of the First Annual Iron Chef Invitational Competition
With each and every dish fit for a king, it was a competition that was almost too close to call. On Sunday, March 4, Sedgebrook retirement community in Lincolnshire hosted the First Annual Iron Chef Invitational competition, pitting the culinary skills of three top area chefs against each other.
"All of the food is amazing. There were constant 'oohs' and 'ahs', one after the other from the judges," said Roger Sosa, executive director of the Buffalo Grove Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, who served as a judge.
Participating in the competition were Executive Chef Kira Eggert and Sous Chef Vanna Hong from Sedgebrook; Executive Chef Aric Spiczka and Sous Chef Rosario Fernandez from Eddie Merlot's in Lincolnshire; and Chef Partner Steve McCarty with Sous Chef Anthony Brickman from Flemings' Steakhouse in Lincolnshire. Fabulous fare prepared for the competition included butter poached lobster with crab stuffed shrimp and red pepper coulis; seared wagyu filet served on Himalayan salt blocks, coffee poached asparagus with Kona reduction, strawberry zabuton with champagne infused whipped cream and more.
Each team created a unique appetizer, entrée and dessert which were artistically plated and presented to the independent judges. All items were scored on taste, presentation and originality. The champion of the First Annual Iron Chef Invitational was Sedgebrook's Executive Chef Kira but the true winners of the day were the judges who sampled the fare and declared it all to be extraordinary.
The competition, which was timed to kick off Lake County Restaurant Week, was the brainchild of Jim Alexander, executive director of Sedgebrook. "There are such fine dining establishments in Lincolnshire, that this seemed like a great opportunity to showcase those eateries. At the same time, we wanted to promote our own chef's amazing skills," he said. "We think this was an outstanding day and we look forward to the Iron Chef Invitational becoming an annual event, showcasing even more area eateries."
