Mount Prospect Woman's Club continues to grow

The Mount Prospect Woman's Club is growing and will soon be adding an "after hours" branch to the club.

An informational meeting and "social" to launch the new MPWC "On the Town" group will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at the Central Schoolhouse, 103 S. Maple St., Mount Prospect.

As an extension of the Mount Prospect Woman's Club, the focus of "On the Town" will be on volunteering and community service just like its parent club. By adding "after hours" events to its calendar, the Mount Prospect Woman's Club will be able to welcome more ladies into the club who might not ordinarily be able to attend the club's daytime meetings.

All of the "On the Town" activities and fundraising events will be scheduled for evening or weekend hours, when more people are available to participate, and events will be scheduled at different places around town.

The club's regularly scheduled business meetings will continue to be the first Tuesday of the month at noon at the Mount Prospect Village Hall, complete with a luncheon and program.

Ladies joining the "On the Town" group will also be members of the Mount Prospect Woman's Club and the General Federation of Women's Clubs, and will be eligible for all member benefits. Women of all ages are invited to join the club and do not need to be a resident of Mount Prospect.

The launch of the "On the Town" group closes out the club's 90th anniversary celebration, which began with a nostalgic party April 4 at the newly restored Central Schoolhouse, the building where the club was started on March 22, 1927.

A luncheon and fashion show titled "1917: A Fashion Retrospective" was also held in the spring, with the proceeds going toward college scholarships for local high school students.

The fashion show featured the "latest" styles from the era, with members of the club, friends and even Mount Prospect Mayor Arlene Juracek strutting the catwalk. In keeping with the historical theme, this year's Membership Tea on Oct. 3 featured a program about Chicago during the era of Al Capone and Prohibition, performed by historical re-enactor Martina Mathisen.

The Mount Prospect Woman's Club has been an integral part of the Village of Mount Prospect's 100-year history and continues its service to the village and its residents today.

By soliciting door-to-door donations, the club spearheaded the campaign to build Mount Prospect's very first public library in the 1940s, which began as a collection of 300 secondhand books on a single tier of shelves housed in the one-room schoolhouse building.

In the 1950s, the club turned its attention to financing the construction of the bus shelter on Central Road. Today, in addition to helping fulfill the needs of the Village of Mount Prospect, the club annually awards college scholarships to graduating high school seniors and supports more than 20 local and global philanthropical organizations, as well as the United States veterans, through various fundraisers and collections.
