Judge to discuss military justice system at Navy League meeting Oct. 17

"Justice in the Military Legal System" will be explored at the Tuesday, Oct. 17, meeting of Navy League Aurora Council 247 at Grandma's Table Restaurant, 1700 Douglas Road in Montgomery.

After a 5:15 p.m. reception and 6 p.m. dinner, Chicago native and U.S. Military Court of Appeals Judge Margaret A. Ryan will outline the role of the court and discuss cases that have changed military conduct and law.

The public is invited. Admission is $20 for dinner with choice of fish, chicken or beef entrees, or $12 for a dinner salad. Soup or salad, dinner rolls, vegetables, dessert and nonalcoholic drink are included.

Judge Ryan, an Arlington, Va. resident, serves on the U.S. Military Court of Appeals, military equivalent of the U.S. Supreme Court.

A 1985 graduate of Knox College, Judge Ryan joined the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces in December 2006. She received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Pace University Law School in 2007, became a lecturer in law at George Washington University Law School in 2012 and became an elected member of the American Law Institute in 2015.

Prior to her nomination to the court by President George W. Bush, Judge Ryan was a partner in several litigation and appellate practices. She served as a law clerk to both Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Judge J. Michael Luttig of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

Before entering the private sector, Judge Ryan served on active duty as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. She served in units within the second and third Marine expeditionary forces as a staff officer, company commander, platoon commander and operations officer. Her tours included deployments to the Philippines during a coup attempt and to Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations.

Judge Ryan attended law school under the Marine Corps Law Education Program at the University of Notre Dame where she was a member of the law review, received awards for legal writing and outstanding scholarship and graduated first in her class, summa cum laude.

As a judge advocate, Judge Ryan served as a trial counsel and chief trial counsel in Okinawa, Japan, and Quantico, Va. She was selected to serve as Gen. Charles C. Krulak's aide-de-camp when he was the Marine Corps commandant.
