'25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee' continues this weekend

The Elgin Summer Theatre continues "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 21-22, and 3 p.m. Sunday, July 23, at the Hemmens, 45 Symphony Way in Elgin. Tickets are $15-$20. For tickets, call (847) 931-5900 or www.hemmens.org.

This Tony-Award winning musical has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor as it follows a group of eccentric adolescents in their quest for 1st prize in the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of words, hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.

The Elgin production is directed by Terry Broeker, new to Elgin Summer Theatre this year. Past performances include "Hair," "Grease," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "Annie," "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Rent," BroadwayWorld Chicago Award nominee "Next to Normal," and "A Chorus Line."

The Elgin Summer Theatre, a showcase for regional talent, is funded through a grant from the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission and the City of Elgin.
