Picnic like a pioneer with Schaumburg Park District

Step back to a summer day in the 1880s during the Schaumburg Park District's Old Settlers' Picnic.

The picnic is set for noon-3 p.m., July 15, at Volkening Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road. Interpretive staff will re-enact a typical community picnic during the 19th century in Schaumburg.

Based on traditions of first-generation German immigrants, the event will feature live music, historic games and farm livestock.

"In 1880s Schaumburg there was an event called Old Settlers' Picnic, so we decided to bring it back," said Patricia Kennedy, farm program coordinator. "It was fun, similar to a beer garden, where everyone came to socialize, enjoy food and play games."

Admission is free. Participants may bring picnic foods or purchase food, including brats, hot dogs and soft drinks and adult beverages for participants 21 and older.
