Community High School District 128 Special Olympians were among the 4,200 record-number athletes who competed in six sports at the 2017 Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games held June 9 - 11 in Bloomington-Normal. The D128 athletes received the following honors:

Nathan Ferrara - Bocce - Silver in Doubles

Mallory Marvin - Track - 7th in the 50m

Eric Haderlein - Track - Bronze in the 200m

Anna Scholler - Bocce - Silver in Doubles

Vinny Roberts - Bocce - Silver in Singles

In addition to the games, members of the family of former D128 Special Olympics Coach Jim Rogers were on hand June 8 for the unveiling of a memorial brick honoring Coach Rogers at the Special Olympics Illinois Tribute Park in Normal. The park, dedicated in June of 2015, is a lasting tribute to the enduring spirit of athletes, families, volunteers, and donors. The park serves as a lasting reminder of all those who make the Special Olympics experience a reality. Coach Rogers, who passed away in 2015, was one of the first coaches to join Head Coach Andy Compton in the early years of the D128 Special Olympics program. The memorial brick was funded through generous donations by present and former D128 Special Olympics parents, coaches, and team members.
