Dream day for St. Charles East’s Koenen

St. Charles East’s Jasper Koenen readies his backhand during sectional tennis action at St. Charles North High School.

    May 24, 2013 9:15 PM

Living the dream — that's what Jasper Koenen is doing. The affable junior from St. Charles East opened his second day at the boys tennis state tournament Friday with a stunning defeat of 5-8 seed Conrad Harron (Chicago U-High), then trumped that effort by shocking 3-4 seed Peter Tarwid of Lake Forest in straight sets. That effort put Koenen in today's semifinal against top seed Martin Joyce (Hinsdale Central) in a 9 a.m. breakfast special at host Hersey in Arlington Heights.

Full-throated Fobbe puts it all together for Stevenson

Warren’s Martin Martinez competes in the Class 3A 1,600-meter run during the boys track state meet preliminaries in Charleston on Friday.

    May 24, 2013 9:24 PM

Stevenson senior Jordan Fobbe has added a lot to his shot put style over the last few weeks, and with everything he has added, the shot just keeps going farther. So in time for his first throw in the Class 3A shot put event in boys track and field state preliminaries at O'Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University, Fobbe added a loud grunt that has become ever-so-popular among shot put throwers. Whether it actually adds distance to the outcome remains up for debate, this much...

The Bison came away with a convincing 3-0 victory over Hersey on Friday night to capture the Mundelein sectional championship. They are now one win away from advancing into the state finals, which will be held next weekend at North Central College in Naperville. Next up for Pat Dudle's club is the Glenbrook South supersectional on Tuesday against Loyola, which defeated its...

    May 24, 2013 9:25 PM

The pressure was off, as far as Cary-Grove sophomore Ricky Hurley was concerned. On his second throw during the shot put competition at the Class 3A session of the boys track and field state championships at Eastern Illinois University and O'Brien Field, Hurley launched the shot a personal-best 55-3.25 to secure a spot in Saturday's finals. His effort was the fifth-best toss of the preliminary round. He also advanced to Saturday's discus finals.

    May 24, 2013 10:06 PM

Since she was a young forward, Naperville North senior Zoe Swift has heard coaches tell her to follow shots. On Friday afternoon at the Class 3A Bolingbrook sectional final, it paid off. Twice. Twice a Naperville North shot hit the Waubonsie Valley crossbar, and twice Swift was on the spot to tap it into the Warriors' goal in the Huskies' 2-1 victory.

    Preliminarily, a good day

Antonio Shenault of Lake Park, second from left, clears the final hurdle in the Class 3A 110-meter high hurdles during the boys state track preliminaries in Charleston Friday.

    May 24, 2013 10:08 PM

The pressure's on, but Lake Park's Antonio Shenault doesn't feel it ... much. In the preliminaries of the 119th boys state track meet Friday at Eastern Illinois University, the sophomore reached Saturday's finals of both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. It helped the three-time defending Class 3A champion Lancers send 11 qualifiers into Saturday's finals, four more than Lyons Twp. and O'Fallon and one more than 2012 runner-up Edwardsville. Wheaton North, Naperville Central and York each advanced...

    May 24, 2013 10:33 PM

St. Charles North pitcher Ankur Shah was dealing, but the Bartlett baseball team had good luck. The Hawks (15-14) will seek their second straight regional title when they take on No. 18 seed Hoffman Estates, which upset No. 2 Batavia Thursday, in the championship game Saturday at noon. The winner advances to next week's...

Kaneland puts itself in good position

Kaneland’s Brandon Bishop crosses the finish line in the Class 2A 200-meter dash during the boys track and field state meet preliminaries in Charleston on Friday.

    May 24, 2013 10:46 PM

Cahokia's runaway success in Friday's Class 2A preliminaries of the 119th boys state track meet did little to dampen Kaneland coach Eric Baron's spirits. "I don't think we have a shot at beating Cahokia. They're going to have to really blow up tomorrow," Baron said of the two-time defending state champs, who advanced an unheard-of 17 of 18 qualifiers into Saturday's finals at Eastern Illinois University. "But I think we're in the top three, we're right there," Baron said. "We'll come here and...
