White Sox pitching prospect Giolito throws 7-inning no-hitter

When the White Sox's top minor-league team was in Indianapolis earlier this month, Class AAA Charlotte pitching coach Steve McCatty talked at length about scuffling starting pitcher Lucas Giolito.

"He's made progress in a lot of areas," McCatty said. "It's a growing thing. And he's got to know what he is first, he's not even close to being the finished product that he's going to be. We just continue to work on the things that allow him to focus and be throwing the fastball where he should and getting ahead, using his breaking ball and his changeup, and he's doing that."

Giolito, one of three young starting pitchers acquired from the Washington Nationals during the off-season in the Adam Eaton trade, pitched a no-hitter for Charlotte Thursday in a 4-0 home win over Syracuse.

Since it was Game 1 of a doubleheader, the game was only 7 innings.

Nonetheless, the 6-foot-6 Giolito showed why he's ranked as the No. 40 overall prospect by Baseball America.

The right-hander (2-5, 5.44) threw 87 pitches (50 for strikes) against Syracuse and had 3 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Andre Rienzo threw the last no-hitter for Charlotte, on July 25, 2014. It was also a 7-inning outing in Game 1 of a doubleheader.
