West Chicago High School evacuated after telephone threat

West Chicago High School was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after school officials said they received a bomb threat, authorities said.

Police responded about 12:45 p.m. after learning about a threatening telephone call and worked with school administrators before deciding to evacuate all students, faculty and staff as a precaution.

West Chicago police Sgt. Eugene Samuel said multiple agencies responded to the campus to help with the evacuation and to search the building.

No injuries were reported and police said no explosive devices were found.

Students were dismissed an hour earlier than normal and arrangements were made for buses to take most of them home.

Police completed their search of the building around 3:30 p.m.

District 94 Superintendent Doug Domeracki said classes are scheduled to resume Thursday morning.

He said students were "respectful, calm and cooperative" during the evacuation.

"Student safety and security is the first priority for all of us," he said.

The school contacted most parents via email to inform them of the threat and evacuation. While the need for such action is rare, Domeracki urged parents to make sure the school has their up-to-date contact information.

West Chicago detectives and members of the DuPage County sheriff's office are investigating.
