East Dundee police: Man forced teen at gunpoint to visit ATM

A 39-year-old East Dundee man was being held on $200,000 bail on charges he forced a teenage co-worker at gunpoint to drive to an ATM and withdraw $300, according to police and court records.

Leon Chatman, of the 200 block of River Haven Drive, faces numerous felony charges, including armed violence, aggravated robbery with a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful restraint, according to Kane County court records.

East Dundee Police Chief Terry Mee said Chatman is accused of threatening the victim with a gun and having the person drive to a West Dundee bank sometime after 3 p.m. Dec. 27.

"There was a threat of using the handgun," Mee said.

After money was withdrawn, Chatman freed the uninjured 19-year-old victim, who contacted police.

Mee said Chatman was arrested about 6 p.m. that day, and he was armed with a handgun.

Court records indicate Chatman was due in court that morning on a charge of driving while his license was suspended from August 2017.

Chatman didn't show up to court and a warrant was issued. He was served the next day at the jail, records show.

Chatman is next due in court Friday and faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the most severe charge of armed violence.
