Services Thursday for priest who served in Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect

The Rev. Joseph A. Pastick, 94, who served parishes in Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove and Mount Prospect and who was remembered as a generous and compassionate minister, died Oct. 19 in New Port Richey, Florida, the Archdiocese of Chicago announced Wednesday in a news release.

Pastick served as associate pastor at St. Emily Parish in Mount Prospect from 1980 to 1987 and at Our Lady of the Wayside Parish in Arlington Heights from 1987 to 1993, when he retired from active ministry in the archdiocese and relocated to Florida.

"I worked with him for four years and found him to be very generous and compassionate - always willing to do anything for his parish," said the Rev. Martin Barnum, who was the Our Lady pastor when Pastick served there. Barnum had known Pastick since he was a child attending St. Felicitas Parish on 84th Street in Chicago where Pastick was associate pastor from 1949 to 1956, according to the news release.

Pastick succeeded the Rev. Thomas A. Baima at Our Lady. "I remember Father Joe fondly," said Baima, vice rector for Academic Affairs of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. "I would see him frequently over the years, at parish events and priest gatherings."

The Rev. Vince Costello, who worked with Pastick in the last year of his service at Our Lady, recalls him in the news release as a "very dedicated priest. … He did his best to serve God and the Church."

After moving to Florida, Pastick assisted with priestly ministry at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in New Port Richey. He celebrated the 60th anniversary of his ordination in 2009 and retired as sacramental minister in 2011.

Pastick, who was born in Chicago, was the oldest of eight children. He was ordained in 1949. Among the parishes where he served were St. Mary in Buffalo Grove from 1961 to 1964 and Our Lady of Humility in Beach Park/Zion from 1975 to 1980.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at Our Lady of the Wayside Parish, 434 W. Park St., Arlington Heights, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. led by Rev. Edward Fialkowski. Interment will take place at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
