Elgin gardener wins largest tomato in East Dundee contest

A familiar face took top honors in the largest tomato contest at the Depot Market in East Dundee Saturday.

All eyes were on Dundee Township Visitors Center Manager Bill Zelsdorf as he placed each of 19 contest tomatoes on a digital scale. Eager growers hushed as the numbers were announced in hopes of earning a share of the $700 in donated prizes from area merchants.

In the end, first place went to Steve Tobler of Elgin, a repeat winner. Tobler's entry Saturday was a 3-pound, 13¾-ounce mutant-shaped red tomato. Prizes, valued at $270, included coupons, gift certificates, a book about East Dundee history and more.

Now in its 20th year, the contest has drawn a variety of entrants. This year was no different as school-aged children, parents, grandparents and even pets waited for the winner to step into the spotlight.

“It's just good dirt and plenty of water,” Tobler said of his effort. “Nothing fancy.”

He added that he uses seeds from the best of his crop to give him the best chance each year.

“It's something fun,” said Zelsdorf of the annual contest. “It brings attention to the market.”

The weekly Depot Market draws a few dozen vendors every Saturday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Vendors sell antiques, collectibles, furniture, books, clothing, jewelry and locally produced fruits, vegetables, plants, flowers, baked goods, honey and jams.

“All the vendors support each other,” said Cora Walsh of Geneva as she stood in her booth with a “Days of the West” theme. “People are friendly here. There is no pressure. They all will tell you a story. This is a good place to visit.”
