One more shot at romance in ‘Before Midnight’
The hardest segment to watch in “Before Midnight” — an extended, emotional hotel-room argument that comprises the film’s final third — was actually the easiest to shoot, say co-stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and director Richard Linklater.

3-D 'Epic' a kid-friendly animated action fantasy
The 3-D action fantasy "Epic" gains major bump-ups from witty visuals and pithy jokes (a bit about a fruitfly's life-span is a classic), Danny Elfman's superbly wrought score — buttressing the action with aural thrills and celestial spirituality — and from Christoph Waltz's unnerving vocal hissings as Mandrake, the Lord Voldemort of this story, all about an enchanted forest under attack.

'Fast & Furious' sequel lives up to its name
Don't call "Fast & Furious 6" a regular action movie. It's a 15-year-old boy's ultimate live-action version of a Roadrunner/Coyote cartoon driven by muscle cars, muscle guys, muscle girls and a Victoria's Secret music-video shoot tossed in for extra testosterone teasing. Speaking of car metaphors, park your expectations of common sense and realism at the theater door. You won't need them.

Weekend picks: Go country with McGraw, Wilson
You have your choice of country superstars Friday. Head to Tinley Park to see Tim McGraw in his Two Lanes of Freedom tour. Or see Grammy-winning singer Gretchen Wilson belt out her country sound at the Arcada in St. Charles. Need a laugh? Check out the Comedy Shrine's audience-interactive, adults-only improv show “Whose Line?” It's art fests aplenty this weekend, too, in Schaumburg and Barrington.

Third time's no charm for 'Hangover'
In Todd Phillips' second sequel "The Hangover Part III," the sense of camaraderie that once bonded the Wolfpackers feels contrived and forced. Although these characters profess to love each other, these actors don't even bother to make the words sound sincere. For every comical line that works, others cling to the soundtrack like cold, congealed spaghetti. This "Hangover" barely hangs on.

Museum of the Confederacy focuses on Gettysburg
Among the swords, the wrenching letters home and the haunting photographs in the Museum of the Confederacy's new exhibit on Gettysburg, few artifacts embody the ferocious battle more than the eight battle flags recovered from the bloodied fields where Pickett's Charge was fought. The flags, among more than 500 in the museum's extensive collection, are the centerpiece of "Gettysburg: They Walked...
Khaled Hosseini’s new book is another tear-jerker
My main goal in reading Khaled Hosseini's new book, "And the Mountains Echoed," was to avoid crying. I failed within the first 20 pages. And by the last page, I was bawling. So, yes, much like Hosseini's earlier works, "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns," his latest book is bathed in sadness and despair, with the requisite occasional ray of hope. "And the Mountains Echoed" is...
Singer Laura Mvula enchants on debut
Infused with a range of influences, including African folk and modern pop, English-born singer Laura Mvula is distinctively different on her debut album, "Sing to the Moon." Comparisons to Nina Simone and rising Scottish newcomer Emeli Sande have already been made, but Mvula shouldn't be compared to anyone.

DuPage reconsidering Islamic prayer center plan
A proposal to convert a house into a mosque is back before DuPage County's zoning board of appeals after a federal judge ordered that the county take another look at the project. “The decision to reject ICWS didn't comply with the law,” said Mark Daniel, the attorney representing the center. “They (county officials) have a chance to fix it.”
