Woodridge man held in beating at arcade in Downers Grove

A 24-year-old Woodridge man is in custody, accused of severely beating a woman Friday night at a Downers Grove arcade.

Bail was set at $75,000 Monday morning for Kavin Choice, 24, of the 7000 block of Woodward Avenue. Choice is charged with one count of aggravated domestic battery and one count of aggravated battery in a public place.

During Monday's hearing, DuPage County Assistant State's Attorney Thomas Minser showed Judge Jeffrey MacKay a roughly 30-second video clip from the establishment's security system that shows Choice striking the victim at least 10 times with "substantial punches" to her face and head.

After the beating, prosecutors said Choice scooped up his 3-year-old daughter, who witnessed the attack, and fled. He also is accused of sending the victim a threatening text about an hour later.

Downers Grove police said arcade employees called 911 during the beating but Choice wasn't found until Sunday morning when officers discovered he was already in custody in a neighboring county on unrelated charges.

Prosecutors did not say what provoked the attack that left the victim with chipped teeth and bruising to her face and head.

Choice's attorney called the situation an isolated case and sought a lower bond than the $500,000 sought by prosecutors so Choice could continue a truck driving education program he is enrolled in.

Should Choice post bail, he will be fitted with a GPS device and barred from having any contact with the victim or his daughter.

Choice will be arraigned on March 14.
