Elgin High to host first Relay For Life

Elgin High School students are organizing the school's first Relay For Life event May 19.

Organizers are seeking donors, sponsors and advertisers for event T-shirts, and cancer survivors to participate in a survivors' dinner that night.

"It is a community event," said Lisa Holbrook, relay faculty sponsor who teaches chemistry and physical science at Elgin High School.

Weather permitting, the survivors' dinner is 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Elgin High's Memorial Field, 1200 Maroon Drive, and will be moved indoors in case of inclement weather. Anyone interested in attending the dinner, becoming a sponsor or donating can contact Holbrook at (847) 888-5100, ext. 8226, or email lisaholbrook@u-46.org.

"They can put their business logo on a T-shirt," Holbrook said. "We need logos at least two weeks before the event."

Opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m. followed by a survivors' lap. The relay will conclude at 6 a.m. May 20.

Anyone can register to be part of a team at relayforlife.org/elginhighschoolil. Each participant must raise $100.

So far, roughly 50 participants, including students, school staff members and parent-teacher organization representatives, have signed up.

"Because it's our first time we really set our goal low at $10,000," said Holbrook adding, she is hopeful of raising $20,000.

Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society's research efforts.
