Streamwood celebrates Wal-Mart Supercenter Remodel

Officials from the Village of Streamwood and Wal-Mart celebrated the recent investment made by the company in the store on S. Barrington Road at a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning. The Streamwood Wal-Mart has undergone a remodel designed to improve the customer shopping experience.

In addition to redesigned electronics, cosmetics, produce, bakery, jewelry, apparel and intimates departments, updates at the store include:

• Added self-checkout lanes that make it quicker for customers to scan and pay for their items;

• New layout, design and expanded product selection in the sporting goods and hardware departments;

• Updated signs that make it easier to locate departments across the store;

• Upgraded apparel department with new selections in men's/boy's;

• Additional grab-and-go food options, including a fresh bread table in bakery, as well as pizza and chicken warmer cases near checkout.

Village President Billie Roth joined by Village Manager Sharon Caddigan, Police Chief Ed Valente and Wal-Mart officials to celebrate the store improvements and Walmart's long-term commitment to the Streamwood community.

"Wal-Mart has been an exceptional community partner with the Village of Streamwood since its opening in 1990," said Village President Roth. "The Village has appreciated their support for our community events and programming. Since 1990, Wal-Mart has provided over $60,000 in support of our DARE program, Summer Celebration, Helping Hands, and most recently our Career Exploration Programs. Their participation and support have made these programs possible. We greatly appreciate their cooperation and assistance, and are excited about their reinvestment into the community with this new reopening."

From its membership in the Streamwood Chamber of Commerce to its leadership in the Career Exploration Program, Wal-Mart has been a part of the Streamwood community for more than 25 years.

"Community involvement is critical to who we are at Wal-Mart," said Store Manager Cyndi Kolich, who started her career with Wal-Mart as a cashier at the Streamwood store in 1990 before being promoted four times. "By playing an active role in our communities, we can make a real difference in helping people live better."

Wal-Mart reaffirmed this commitment to the community by donating over $6,000 in grants to local organizations, including $500 to Helping Someone Smile, $1,500 to the Village of Streamwood, and $2,000 each to the Trinity Charities Food Pantry and Streamwood Summer Celebration.

The Streamwood store employs approximately 300 associates. Based on the store's performance in the fourth quarter of 2016, Wal-Mart announced in March that over 99 percent of eligible associates at the store received cash bonuses totaling more than $37,000. Over the past two years, Wal-Mart has invested billions of dollars in training, education and higher wages. These investments offer associates skills, knowledge and tools to help them grow with the company and provide great customer service during a time of rapid change in shopping habits.

Wal-Mart announced earlier this week that, starting on April 19, the company is going to begin offering a discount on eligible, online-only (non-store) items that customers buy online and ship to any Wal-Mart store for pickup. This pickup discount, which is available at the Streamwood store, creates price transparency, empowering customers to shop smarter and choose whether they want to pick up their products and save even more money or ship two-day for free to home.
