Author Bill Jamerson presents 'Dollar a Day Boys' April 6 at St. Charles library

Author Bill Jamerson will present "Dollar a Day Boys," a music and storytelling program about the Civilian Conservation Corps, at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.

Dressed in uniform, Jamerson will present a nostalgic look at the 1930s federal works program that gave employment to millions of men, many from Illinois. His program will include stories of strength, wit and charm.

Jamerson has performed "Dollar a Day Boys" at CCC reunions around the country and at dozens of CCC-built national and state parks.

The Civilian Conservation Corps was a federal work program created by President Franklin Roosevelt in the heart of the Great Depression.

During its nine-year run from 1933-1942, 2.5 million men enrolled across the country were paid $30 a month (equivalent to about $562 in 2017) to work planting trees, fighting forest fires, building parks, and helping farmers prevent soil erosion.

The Civilian Conservation Corps was disbanded in 1942 with many young men being called to war in the draft.

Registration for this program is required.
