Get the chores done at Heritage Farm

Go back in time with the Schaumburg Park District and experience a busy spring day on a working 19th century farm.

The annual Springtime on the Farm is set for noon to 4 p.m., April 23 at Volkening Heritage Farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road.

"Visitors will experience a busy spring day in 1880s Schaumburg at the event," said Patty Kennedy Green, manager of conservation services at Spring Valley. "We encourage guests to stop by the barn to meet the livestock."

Participants will help with spring vegetable planting, sow oats in the fields, churn butter, re-stuff bedding with fresh straw and wash clothes in a washtub. Demonstrations include plowing with draft horses and blacksmithing. The event also includes craft activities, games and refreshments.

"In the 1880s, there were a lot of spring chores to complete to ready for the coming seasons. Visitors have an opportunity to see these and even contribute," said Green.

Admission is $4 per person and $16 per family. Children 3 years old and younger are free. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
