Gurnee man pleads guilty to drug-induced homicide

A Gurnee man was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to one count of drug-induced homicide, an attorney said.

Kareem Perkins, 33, is required to serve 75 percent of his prison sentence before being eligible for parole, attorney Greg Nikitas said. Court records show Perkins was awarded 961 days' credit for time already served in Lake County jail.

A second charge of possession of heroin was dropped in exchange for the plea deal, court records show.

Perkins was due to go to trial Monday for supplying drugs that resulted in the death of Christopher Tiskus, 22, of Waukegan.

Waukegan police found Tiskus dead in a house on the 400 block of Keller Avenue at 10:20 p.m. March 14, 2014. An autopsy showed Tiskus died of a drug overdose, authorities said.

A subsequent investigation linked the drugs to Perkins and Haitham Qasem, 30, of Gurnee.

Qasem pleaded guilty July 1, 2015, to one count of manufacturing and delivery of heroin, said Cynthia Vargas, of the Lake County state's attorney's office. He was sentenced to 36 months of periodic imprisonment, 36 months of probation and 200 public service hours, she said.
