West Chicago couple held on $500,000 bail, each, charged with drug-induced homicide
A West Chicago couple was behind bars Wednesday morning accused of selling a fatal dose of heroin last December to a 2013 West Chicago Community High School graduate.
Osvaldo Camaro and Carol Celozzi, both 22 and of the 900 block of Gates Street, are each being held on $500,000 bail and charged with drug-induced homicide and unlawful delivery of a controlled substance in the Dec. 24, 2015, overdose death of Jacob Hageman.
Prosecutors gave very few details during Wednesday morning's bond hearings, other than to say Camaro used Celozzi's phone to set up the sale of the less than 15 grams of heroin that is alleged to have killed Hageman.
After the bond hearing, DuPage County Sheriff's officials released a statement offering more details.
According to the statement, deputies responded to a residence on Plank Road in unincorporated DuPage near Naperville for the report of an unresponsive Hageman. With the help of Hageman's family, investigators learned he may have purchased his heroin from a suspect in West Chicago.
According to the statement, investigators then learned that Camaro and Celozzi were selling heroin out of their residence.
The couple were first charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance in February and have been in jail since that time.
Camaro is currently on probation for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance in DuPage and has another delivery case pending.
Celozzi is also on probation for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.
Assistant State's Attorney Mandy Meindl told Judge Richard Russo that Celozzi admitted to being a drug user and told police she and Camaro drive to Chicago to "pick up heroin on a daily basis."
"My condolences go out to Jacob's family for their loss." Sheriff John Zaruba said in the written statement. "My office is dedicated to stemming the tide of heroin and other illegal narcotics in DuPage County. We will not back down when it comes to pursuing these criminals and their illegal dealing."
