Car driver ticketed in Batavia crash that killed motorcyclist

A 15-year-old student driver has been charged with failure to yield while turning left in connection with an Aug. 4 crash in Batavia in which a motorcyclist died.

Batavia police announced the charge Friday. They did not release the name the driver because she is a juvenile.

The girl, from North Aurora, was driving a Pontiac Vibe south on Randall Road and turning left onto Main Street. She had a valid learner's permit, and was accompanied by a licensed driver.

A 20-year-old motorcyclist from Oswego was driving north on Randall.

Both had a green light.

The girl began to turn left before the driver saw the motorcyclist. She then stopped in mid-turn, with part of the car in the northbound inside lane of traffic.

Police said the motorcyclist braked to avoid hitting the Vibe, but the bike skidded and fell. The man was thrown into the front end of the Vibe. He was not wearing a helmet.

The motorcyclist had a valid driver's license, but did not have a class "M" motorcycle classification. He was riding a 1994 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle.
