Messin' Around in the Dirt Day is free family fun
Children can get to know nature and learn through playing at the upcoming "Messin' Around in the Dirt Day" in Aurora. Join University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners for several, free interactive stations Thursday, July 21.
Drop in to The Growing Place, 2000 Montgomery Road in Aurora, between 10 a.m. and noon, to explore nature through engaging topics, such as lovely ladybugs, bamboo bug homes, and squirming Herman the Worm. Participants also be able to make and take home nature crafts, and there will be Master Gardeners on hand to provide garden tips and tricks for parents.
" 'Messin' Around in the Dirt' will be fun for the whole family," said Sarah Fellerer, Master Gardener Program Coordinator for Kane and Kendall Counties. "Grow knowledge while getting up close and personal with nature. Our volunteers will teach through fun, hands-on activities to build an understanding of plants, insects, and soil."
Working and playing in the garden and outdoors provides many benefits. It helps families get in the at least 60 minutes of activity recommended per day for children, and also can teach lessons in environmental science, nutrition, healthy living, and responsibility, as well as provide an overall respect for nature, added Fellerer.
The stations are open to all ages, but are designed for ages 5 to 10 in mind. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required. The fun will resume for a third and final session on Aug. 18 as well.
