Lake County jury awards $1.67 million in medical malpractice suit

A Lake County jury has awarded an 84-year-old woman $1.67 million in damages from a Waukegan hospital for a botched knee replacement surgery in October 2009. The injured patient, who is from Gurnee, lost complete use of her left leg after undergoing a total knee replacement surgery, attorneys for the plaintiff said in a news release Monday. Attorneys Sean Burke and Stephen Phalen, who represented the patient, said the jury held the defendant doctor accountable for medical malpractice and deemed him responsible for injuring his patient's artery during surgery, then allowing an 18-hour delay in responding to the post-surgical emergency.
