Police: South Elgin resident shot intruder

A late-night home invasion Saturday in South Elgin left one intruder hospitalized with a bullet wound suffered when the homeowner wrested a gun away from an accomplice and fired on them, police said.

South Elgin police said both men were later captured and now face home invasion and aggravated battery charges in the confrontation that left the homeowner with a fractured eye socket.

Michael York, 51, of the 300 block of South Collins Street in South Elgin, is in the Kane County jail. and Alan Span 43, of the 300 block of Kathleen Drive in Elgin, was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his leg, according to police.

Police said the homeowner and a friend were entering the home on the 300 block of Windsor Court through an attached garage about 11:30 p.m. Saturday when they were approached from behind by two men. One of the intruders struck the resident in the face with the butt of a gun, police said.

The victim, according to police, then grabbed the gun from York and fired one shot at him. He missed York but struck Span in the leg, at which point both intruders fled, police said.

Police said they identified York as one of the suspects based on the homeowner's description and previous contact with him. Officers found with York at his residence and took him into custody.

Officers later located Span in the attached garage of York's residence bleeding from what appeared to be a fresh gunshot wound.

York is expected to appear in Kane County bond court Monday. Span will be taken to the county jail when released from the hospital, police said Sunday.
