Skokie woman to lead Oakton Community College board

Ann E. Tennes of Skokie was elected the new chairwoman of Oakton Community College on April 19, as the OCC board of trustees seated new officers and members for 2016-17. Tennes replaces previous chairwoman Patricia N. Harada, a Wilmette resident, who is serving a six-year term. William Stafford of Evanston was elected vice chairman and Joan W. DiLeonardi, of Des Plaines was elected secretary. Patryk Swietek of Glenview was seated as the new student trustee for a one-year term. Other members of the board are Kyle Frank of Skokie, Benjamin Salzberg of Northbrook, and Jody Wadhwa of Northbrook, who are all serving six-year terms.

• Danielle Pawlak, a first-year teacher at Tarkington Elementary School, Wheeling, was awarded a full scholarship to pursue a master's degree through Ashford University's online program. The scholarship was presented by Joen Larson, dean of students at Ashford University, in partnership with the No Excuses University network of schools. The No Excuses University Network is comprised of schools nationwide that support and encourage students to believe that attending college and being academically successful is possible for all students, regardless of background. Tarkington became a No Excuses school in 2010.

• Shaun D. Boyes, son of Jon D. and Maria C. Boyes of Hoffman Estates, will graduate from Rush University Medical College on May 26 and in July, he will begin a residency in the Pathology department at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood. Boyes attended Armstrong Elementary and Eisenhower Junior High schools in Hoffman Estates, and graduated from Hoffman Estates High School with high honors. He received a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry, both summa cum laude, from Loyola University of Chicago. Boyes, the married father of one daughter, lives in Schaumburg.
